Bangladesh to export bandwidth to Nepal

Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company (BSCCL) is looking for new markets to export its huge unused bandwidth and the new destination is Nepal, said officials of the state-owned listed firm.

The lone submarine cable company of Bangladesh is now in talks with Nepal Telecom to export about 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) of bandwidth.

A memorandum of understanding will be signed within a short time, Mashiur Rahman, managing director of the BSCCL, told The Daily Star recently.

“Discussions have been ongoing for a long time and now we are ready to ink the deal,” said Rahman.

As Bangladesh has access to the landlocked Himalayan nation only via India, BSCCL and Nepal Telecom have approached an Indian company, which has expressed willingness to establish the connection, he said.

“So, before finalising the deal we will also have to sign a tripartite agreement.”

Nepal now buys bandwidth from Chennai in India and China to meet its daily demand for about 250 Gbps, but due to its remote location high-speed internet cannot be ensured, Rahman said.

The BSCCL’s second undersea cable lands in Kuakata of Patuakhali, which is closer to Nepal.

“This is why Nepal has come to us,” he added.

Bangladesh has 2,600 Gbps bandwidth capacity from two submarine cables, but only 900 Gbps is consumed locally. BSCCL is working to get its third undersea cable by 2023, which alone will add another 7,200 Gbps.

BSCCL is currently exporting 10 Gbps of bandwidth to India’s northeastern state of Tripura though their state-run telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).

But BSNL does not afford internet bandwidth from Bangladesh anymore and will suspend its deal next month.

Bandwidth export to Tripura had begun on February 8, 2016. Initially, the price was $10 per Mbps and BSCCL earned Tk 9.6 crore in the first year. Later, the price was revised down twice to bring it to $6 per Mbps. Still, BSNL has been unable to pay dues since September 2018.

The Indian company owes Tk 6.39 crore to BSCCL, which is no closer to recouping the dues.

Rahman, however, said some other remote Indian states are eager to buy bandwidth from them.

Bangladesh earlier had taken an initiative to export bandwidth to Bhutan, another landlocked neighbour, but the plan did not come to fruition as India did not join in.

BSCCL’s shares closed at Tk 100 on the Dhaka Stock Exchange yesterday, up 7.53 per cent from the previous day.

See what I said about these Kanjoosi idiots? These kanjoosi cheap-a$$ habits are the reason India will never develop. As is evident now. Kanjoos-e-Makkhichoos....

And Sanghis beating chest about Supapawa status when they can't pay small bills.

Deadbeat Supapawa....

Better sell to Nepal who will pay either in cash or hydroelectric power.

Tripura needs to join BD for it's own future as India is holding it back.

The extra capacity being added means that BD + export requirements should be sufficient for another 1-2 decades, thus just goes to show how serious that BD is about IT and all thanks to Hasina's son Joy who is leading the sector.

@mmr, you should realize this mate. It's not only about electricity, but also about Internet. Now high quality broadband is available even in villages ( cost varies area to area though). There are lots of other stuff ( that was unimaginable during previous govt) and I don't think that worth my time to find out and write . All are very old stuffs. (Just one thing and that is, during previous govt we need to use 56 kbps gprs of grameen phone to connect to Internet with 1500 tk monthly charge and with post paid connection! And broadband was limited to big cities only and 512 kbps speed was considered rocket speed, 128 kbps was considered decent speed. But now 5 mbps speed is not enough for people, lol)

And that's the reason people do not show any movement against this govt unless it's necessary ( like quota movement and safe street movement). And why will they show? Sukhe thakte bangali ke bhute kilaise naki!

However if in future any govt ( be it AL or BNP or any others) can do their best to serve national interest, I think people will have no issue with them.

All we want is a prosperous Bangladesh and we are very much capable making Bangladesh a prosperous country. We are a nation of 170 million patriotic people! Just we need current political stability and an effective govt who needs to focus on national interest like this current one.

BD IT Exports are anything from 2-3 billion US dollars when unofficial items are included.
It is by far the fastest growing sector in BD economy.

Joy thinks it will surpass Garments in 2030 but whatever happens it will be massive export earner for BD over this decade.

I also hope so. And also because of fast speed Internet, freelancing sector is growing too rapidly. There are no exact official data though as this profession is not yet well introduced in Bangladeshi society though. But govt is planing to give ID card to freelancers. If govt can do it without free of corruption, you will see that this sector ( major part is IT based) , is earning huge revenue ( officially because unofficially they are already bringing huge amount) .

And all are possible for high speed Internet. In order to do jobs in various online freelancing market places ( like upwork, fivver, peopleperhour, 99design, freelancer.com, toptal and many more) you need atleast decent speed Internet speed.

And as well as you can give the freelancers as social status, more people will be interested in this section, because lots of people want social status over money!

So if govt carefully provide identify cards to them, then revenue will greatly increase and remittance will increase too in considerable amount. This video of Mr Salman F Rahman will make this thing more desirable for you. Try to watch it to know the real problem. @UKBengali

Bd did well. But again credit goes to bd business people and general people.

But dont get too excited. Our default loan is highest in history...getting worse. Fiscal budget deficit cross 5 percent for the first time in 11 years. Bd economy is still in risk of going down.

I dont doubt bd will reach 1 trillion dollar economy by 2030. Simply because we are third world 2000 percapita economy. Even we reach 6000 per capita which is lower then poorest country in EU (Bulgaria) our economy will be 1 trillion dollar. No big deal!

It was even not 2000 per capita once. It will increase. And if you want to compare 6000 per capita ( if it reach by 2030) you should consider ppp not nominal.

So negative thinking is not going to benefit us! ;). And also purchasing power parity is 5000 $ not 2000$. So that's a fact too!

@mmr

You think that common people and businesses laid those submarine cables?

The whole IT outsourcing phenomenon was AL led by Joy and BD would be nowhere in this field without his vision and leadership.

Fun fact: Per capita BD probably does more IT outsourcing than India now.

I was talking about 2000 usd nominal. PPP is just bogus number. so when i said bd will be 6000 i meant usd not ppp.

We still dont even have 1 percent of total global BPO market.

6000 USD will translate Bangladesh into a trillion dollar economy with 17.5 cr to 18 cr population
Yes it will just have keep spending decent money on infrastructure and keep up private sector investments 23 to 25 percent of gdp. Which i think is easy for bd.

We still dont even have 1 percent of total global BPO market.

BPO is not the same as IT outsourcing as it encompasses lots of other work.

"Data Soft now exports IT services to countries like the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, England, EU, USA, and Saudi Arabia"

"Recently, it partnered with Johnson Control Hitachi, one of Japan's biggest technology firms. Data Soft is also working with Face Recognition Systems for some schools in Florida in the United States and providing a monitoring technology for central water management in Mecca, Saudi Arabia"

"As a whole, Bangladesh has earned about $1 billion (around 890 million euros) in the last year through its IT services, according to BASIS" - this is just what has been picked up via official channels and the true figure could be anywhere from 2-3 US billion dollars each year.

Per capita BD is ahead of India in IT outsourcing when unofficial channels are included - this of course does not include call-centre work that India has in abundance as BD is not really interested in this area.

I am the first one to call out AL on areas like not spending enough on defence but they have done amazing things with the economy - the IT sector is very robust and vibrant and will help create a well-paid and skilled workforce. They are also not forgetting lower-skilled work as 100 SEZs will be built by 2030.

The above shows how India remains behind BD. Its Tripura is unable to consume only 10 Gbps of bandwidth. It is because the poverty in India causes the miser Indians to shy away from consuming the supply of bandwidth. They are unable to pay for our company and want to eat free lunch.

India will remain the Museum of 3rd world country for the next two hundred years.
