I am not questioning your ability to understand math. However, many BAL people learn from very strange math texts that even Newton or Jadab did not know about.

A dredging is not just a line. It is the volume of soil/earth that has to be removed. So, $52,000 figure is not valid.

For example, the volume of a km stretch of dredging may be 1000m length x 3,000m width x 3m depth, making the volume 9,000,000 m3. It is certainly not possible to dredge by $0.006 (Taka5.0) per m3 or $0.006 per meter of length.

In the case of all these fictitious projects, the govt people say something that is just not true. It is Bangladesh or Hasina style to talk but not work. May be Hasina wants to see the reactions in different Forums like PDF.

It's not 5 taka it's much more. He has done the calculation wrong.

He says 1km of river is 3km wide and he used this measurement for his calculation.

Well at least you have admitted now that your first figures were wrong. You should not speculate and spread false information if you don't know this business.

I am not an expert either, frankly, but the closest comparison I could find was in India where they quoted $52m for 861km dredging.

So $520m sounds about right. But if there is independent/opposition expert opinions they should be heard

All projects tend to balloon in cost as time goes on, so once implemented this will also take it natural course along with all the involved parties getting their undue cuts from it.
There has to be a water management system in place to deal with flood, dry season water shortage, and the whim of the Indian mind.

The inauguration of the program is on Saturday so it cannot be a hoax.
Let us wait for more details to become available.

Regardless of cost, this is a necessary initiative that should have been implemented ages ago.
Even if there widespread corruption, successful dredging will go a long way to help communication contributing billions of dollars to the economy through movement of freight and passengers.

It will also offer an alternative mode for transporting military personnel and heavy equipment during war.

The government has taken measures to ensure navigability in 10,000 kilometres of river routes through dredging 178 rivers, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today told parliament.
“The current government has taken up a dredging master plan to bring navigability to the internal waterways across the country. Under it, around 10,000km of river routes will be made navigable through excavating 178 rivers by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority [BIWTA],” said the junior minister.

He said this in reply to a query from ruling Awami League MP Nurunnabi Chowdhury from Bhola-3.
As per the plan, the state minister said the BIWTA had begun excavation of 12 important river routes, capital dredging in 53 river routes, navigability development of the river route from Mongla port to Pakshi via Chandpur, Mawa, Goalando and restoration of old Brahmaputra, Darla, Tulai and Punarva rivers.
Besides, feasibility study of 47 more rivers will be done under the plan, he added.
The minister’s question-answer was tabled at the beginning of yesterday’s parliament session with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
In reply to another query from treasury bench MP Kazi Nabil Ahmed from Jashore-3, the state minister informed the House that the length of the inland river routes reduced to about 6,000km during the dry season, while it rose to around 24,000km during the rainy season.
Replying to another question from AL MP M Abdul Latif from Chattogram-1, Khalid Mahmud said excavation of 470km of river routes under the Bangladesh-India river protocol had already begun. It will be jointly financed by the two countries.
Responding to a question from AL MP Benjir Ahmed from Dhaka-20, the state minister said that the government had taken initiatives to build 39 different types of water vessels for the inland route.
Besides, the state minister said, the government will procure six large ships to ply on international routes and it will also purchase four more cellular ships.

Polythene and plastic materials continued causing difficulties in the capital dredging of the river Karnaphuli which began two years ago to restore the river’s depth for vessel movement through those points where navigability decreased drastically.
Concerned authority said that though more than two years passed only 28-30 per cent work of the project was completed so far.
On September 27, 2018, Chattogram Port Authority began the dredging work from Bakalia Char area. Under the project ‘Sadarghat-Bakalair Char Dredging’ the 2.5 kilometres long and 250 metres wide area from Sadarghat to Bakalia Char was to be deepened about 4 metres from the sea level by removing 43 lakh cubic metres of sludge.
The dredging was scheduled to be completed within a year at a cost of Tk 258.51 crore.
Bangladesh Navy was engaged to do the maintenance work relating to the dredging work for the next three years.
After completion, the area would look like Hatirjheel in Dhaka, official said.
Fish landing Station would be set up to berth fishing trawlers. After completing the dredging across 400-metre long area, the lighter jetty would be functional and 4 ships would berth in the jetty.
Two years after the project’s inception, CPA chief hydrographer Commander Mohammad Arifur Rahman on Sunday said that the entire project was ruined just due to layers of polythene on the riverbed.
‘The way polythene and plastic have been found is unexpected. They have never been able to lift more than 200 cubic feet of sediment per hour. In fact, the machine has repeatedly failed due to excessive polythene,’ Arifur explained.
He further said, ‘In the Tk 258 crore project, 43 lakh cubic metres of silt was supposed to be extracted from Karnafuli, but only 12 lakh cubic metres has been extracted. Of which, 5 lakh cubic meters is polythene and plastic.’
The hydrographer said that a BUET survey report said that the river had polythene stratum up to 4 metres, but the layer of polythene had accumulated up to 7 metres from the riverbed which is 9-11 metres deep.
Polythene stratum has created a big obstacle in the excavation work.
At first the excavation was started with three dredgers of 20 to 26 inches diameter, but later dredgers of 32 inches diameter were used. Suction cutters were brought in from China. ‘Even after that, the desired success did not come and authorities then had to apply an old method, which is dredging with a local grab dredger,’ Arifur added.
The dredging work was scheduled to be completed in September 2019. The deadline was later extended to June 2020. The CPA is now sending a proposal to the ministry to extend the project duration till June 2023, he added.
Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry director Syed Sagir Ahmed said that for the last few years the residents of low-lying areas of Chattogram and the trade bodies had been suffering a lot due to waterlogging and tidal surge. The delay in Karnaphuli dredging simply aggravated the problem. As the riverbed has filled up, ship can enter into the port only during high tide.
Syed Sagir said that it should be investigated why wrong assessments were made before dredging commenced.
He also added that 7 lakh cubic metres of polythene and plastic means that Karnafuli is on the verge of death.
Earlier, the CPA scrapped another project of Karnaphuli dredging midway.
In April 2011, the CPA awarded a project, titled ‘Capital Dredging and Bank Protection with Jetty Facilities in the Karnaphuli River from Sadarghat Jetty to 3rd Karnaphuli Bridge’ to the Malaysian Maritime and Dredging Corporation and asked the firm to complete the work within 20 months.
The MMDC started their work which in May 2011 and was supposed to end it by January 2013.The project work included dredging up 3.6 million cubic metres of silt from around two kilometres of riverbed stretching from Sadarghat Jetty to some 500 metres off the 3rd Karnaphuli Bridge as well as constructing a 2,615-metre marine driveway with bank protection and a 400-metre jetty.
MMDC, took Tk 166 crore of the Tk 229.54 crore project.
Port officials said that the MMDC dredged up around 2.23 million cubic metres of silt from the riverbed of Karnaphuli. The CPA extended the deadline several times after the 2013 deadline but the contractor failed to show satisfactory progress. After repeated warnings, the CPA scrapped the deal in 2014.

Along side dreding we need to have lots of little mini dams and rubber dams to ensure navigability and storage of water during lean season. I believe this work goes hand in hand and already been implemented in many places in BD.

Indian scums are unreliable so we need to manage the rivers within our border effectively.

Yes, after reading the account above I think it may not be a hoax as usual. But, still I do not understand the technical aspect of this project. Dredging must be accompanied by also building levies or dikes or embankments and sluice gates. I do not find any such elements.

Also missing is the source of money. Is it from the domestic source or the international credit organizations. A project cannot be initiated, at least on the scale that the minister says, without assured sources of finance.
