DHAKA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar has asked the authorities concerned to start the process of launching the country's second satellite Bangabandhu-2 to the orbit.

He said this as Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited (BCSCL) on Wednesday held a meeting to have expert opinions to frame the project proposal in this regard.

May 12, 2018 was a red-letter day for Bangladesh when the country moved to a new era by launching its first "Bangabandhu-1" satellite.

The launch made Bangladesh the 57th nation in the world and the fourth in South Asia after India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to own a satellite.

What for? We don't want another stupid "Akash TV". For the first one I was hyped. I thought it's resources would be well utilized. But I don't think the satellite is used for good potential. It should have been used for internet communication and drone operation. Not some stupid dish tv.

Another white elephant. Hasina's daddy money. Bd will become bankrupt. Also last one was sent by American no bd contributions at all. And hasina's son will get big fat commission.

At the very least it can act as a contingency.

BD has to do this and I commend this initiative. Space is becoming congested. If we do not put our satellites up there to stake a claim very soon there wont be many slots available.

GOB should formulate plans to put up a satellite on our own and kick start a missile programme. Pardon the pun its really not rocket science anymore!!!

Yes but another comms satellite wasn't really necessary unless I am missing something. That money could be used to get a good military satellite.

Military satellites are a lot more expensive (big difference) than civilian-use satellites and most countries who have them usually build their own. The encryption for the uplink/downlink has to be proprietary and sensors especially imaging sensors (visible spectrum, UV, IR etc.) are not cheap either, although they have come down in price many-many fold.

Can also be purchased.
