Energy Bangla - Bangladesh Power Generation to Hit 8,000 MW by 2013

Thursday, 12.08.2011, 09:03am (GMT)

Minister of Finance AMA Muhith said the government wouldensure supply of electricity for 60 per cent citizens of the country by the end of the tenure of Awami League ledalliance rule in 2013.

"The country will be able to achieve the capacity of generating electricity over 9000 megawatt the demand of 8000 mw in 2013" he added.

AMA Muhith said the country will be able to generate electricity about 25000 mw in 2021 and the electricity connection would be-available at each of the citizen houses. The country's Gross Domestic Product(GDP) will be 8 to 9 per cent at the end of 2013 for better power supply, he said.

Criticizing the economists who are against rental power plant Muhith said without quick rental and rental power plant the demand of electricity for the growing economy could not be met.

The Minister's allusion, agreement for three years of purchasing electricity from rental power plants may be extended for another two years.

AMA Muhith has made the comment as chief guest during inaugurating 'Electricity Week-2011' in Bangabandhu International ConferenceCentre (BICC) on Wednesday morning.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Dr Tawfiq e Elahi Chowdhury BB, State Minister of the same ministry Enamul Haque MP and Secretary of mineral resources division Mesbah Uddin addressed the function as special guests. Presided over by additional secretary of power ministry Tapos Kumar Roy, chairman of Rural Electrification Board (REB) Brig Gen Moin Uddin, Director General of power cell Mahbub e SarwarKainath and Chairman of Summit Group Abdul Aziz Khan also spoke on the occasion, among others.

AMA Muhith also said electricity is the first priority for development. The country will get healthy economy during handing over the power of the present government.

The government should lay emphasis use of fossil fuel including gas and coal for generating electricity in future. Condemning some intellectuals who are opposing coal-based power plant the minister said without any pollution generating electricity is quite impossible. For the greatest national interest we have to consider increasing coal based power with a limited pollution.

Giving example of China, India, Brazil, USA and Australia Finance Minister Muhith said those countries are generating huge electricity from coal-based power plant. Coal and gas export is quite impossible for Bangladesh, Muhith said.

The slogan of electricity week of this year is"Economic use of electricity will help en kindle every house". The week is being observed across the country from December 7 to 11 in befitting manner.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has awarded 49 persons and institutions in seven categories including journalists, researchers, customers and employees of the ministry for their extraordinarycontribution in the power sector.

Awarded journalists are Nazmul Imam, special correspondentof Samakal from print media and Akter Hossain of Rtv from electronic media forbest reporting in their respective fields.

Is 25000 MW figure a realistic one!!!

And was he referring to a gdp growth of 8-9% by 2013!!!! :O

Though I heard somewhere that the figure is about 20,000MW, but this report seems to say different!! I think its realistic if the government ensures the flow of the fuel!! Arranging the fuel i.e natural gas, oil is a bigger challenge than setting up the power plants!! Even now, there are enough plants but the lack of fuel is causing the load shedding!!

I support the idea of coal-based power plant, there is a huge deposit of coal in the north Bengal and other areas, should we keep it unused?? Besides, we should be turning towards the nuclear-based power plants, its going to be the key resource in generating energy in a very near future!!

About the GDP growth, 8-9% is unlikely at current circumstances, but if some potential industries i.e. Ship building industry get the proper treatment, the growth is achievable!!

its strange :o

what is the current capacity in bangladesh?

i means Pakistan with having the same size has current installed capacity of 21000 MW which is stagnant since last several years.....& current requirment is 19000 MW

Previous promises were not enough to deceive people? Now new captain appeared to deceive some more on Awami deception? Can Capain who seems to be living in Awami bubble plannet tell us how previous Awani deception of rental power plants are bankrupting Bangladesh, with excessive borrowing and emptying Bangladesh foreign currency reserve?

Installed capacity was only about 4000 mW when this govt was formed. The second son 'KOKKO' of Begum Zia was busy with installing electric poles (KHAMBA) throughout the country during the last govt. Much of the money earmarked for power generation was stolen or misused. So, virtually no power plant was built during the BNP time.

This govt talks much, but, is also trying to do something to improve the situation by building new small power plants. However, total power output is very difficult to calculate. Some are not in operation because of shortage of diesel and gas to these plants. This is why people do not really know what is the present power output. But, it may be somewhere near 5000mW.

Power stations are needed for the next stage of economic development. It is unwise to say that the oil import bill will rise, because BD exports will also rise due to the construction of new production facilities. At present, industrialists are not willing to invest in new factories because gas/power supply is not assured. Once this bottleck is removed, there will be more manufactiring plants and goods.

that was by the tareq's friend company i think but that was not any significant problem as we would generate electricity soon or later then the pole will be use. but what the govt. dong is to show the people that they are doing many thing in power hernaertion creating many small power plant which production cost is very high compare to big power company . ultimately we are going to pay higher price for our electric supply even after govt. subsidy to those small private company .

We dont know what the installed capacity is. We only get the data of actual generation capacity in peak hour. Currently Pakistan is generating around 10 K MW.

Better we pay higher price than not getting electricity at all. This administration talks too much, but it is trying to deliver also. Power rates depend upon the price of a plant and the price of imported oil.

increase the billing rate it is ok as people will at least say yes it is expensive but it is 24 7

no more playing with tender and making fake news and promises

Dhaka, Dec 9 (bdnews24.com)—Finance minister A M A Muhith has said the government has taken three new projects and sees the nagging electricity crunch over in three and a half years.

"Under the projects, a total of 6000 megawatts power will be generated. Already 2000 megawatts have been added to the national grid. The target of feeding a further 4,000 MW will be reached soon," Muhith said on Friday.

"So, there will be no power crisis in the next three and a half years though it is taking some time."

The finance minister was addressing the inaugural function of a three-day seminar titled 'Bangladesh at 40: Changes and Challenges' at Jahangirnagar University organised by the Department of Business Studies.

Muhith said, "At its birth, Bangladesh was known as a "bottomless basket". But despite limited internal resources, we have come a long way and are on course for achieving 7 percent growth."

He remarked that the social discriminations has reduced, its human development index has risen and significant progresses have been made in infrastructure development of the rural economy and social security programmes.

The minister claimed that the foreign investors had shied away from doing business in Bangladesh due to corruption during the tenures of the previous governments. "But the situation has completely changed now."

He cited the lack of internal resources and low investment in the private sector as 'challenges' for Bangladesh.

Speaking at the seminar, Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman said that the country's per capita income growth had increased by 1.1 percent and 3.2 percent in the 1970s and '80s respectively while 'the growth has increased by 5.8 percent in the first decade of the century'.

"The poverty rate is now 30 percent though the rate was 57 percent in 1990." He added that Bangladesh made significant progress on the index of human resources development and in cutting rural poverty.

Former caretaker government adviser Akbar Ali Khan said the scope of the revolution is so vast that it is not possible to measure it in such a short time.

But he questioned the government statistics in fixing the poverty line. The government statistics show that 35 percent people of the country live below the poverty line but the World Bank puts it at 81 percent."

"The poverty in the country is huge if the per capita income is considered. The people of the country are yet to come out from the circle of hunger and malnutrition," he added.

The former secretary also said the economic discrimination has increased and cautioned that Bangladesh would turn into a highly discriminatory country if steps are not taken immediately.

English national daily Financial Express editor Moazzem Hossain, Business Studies dean Professor Abdul Bayes and JU vice-chancellor Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir also addressed the programme.

The seminar that consists of nine sessions will end on Dec 11. It will discuss the progress and challenges of Bangladesh in terms of its economy over the last 40 years since independence.
