Bangladesh not happy with Facebook

RUMOURS ON COVID-19

The government is unhappy with the Facebook authorities as the social media giant is not complying with Bangladesh requests to delete some posts relating to spread of novel coronavirus, which the government considers to be ‘rumours’

Sources with the government agencies, which monitor posts on social media, said they have sent at least 100 requests to Facebook authorities to delete some posts relating to the spread of coronavirus, which is spreading across the globe including Bangladesh.

The agencies said they did not get any response from Facebook authorities until now to stop these ‘rumours’.

Minister for Post and Telecommunications Mustafa Jabbar on Wednesday told The Independent, “It is a matter of regret that the Facebook is ignoring our requests to stop rumours spreading through Facebook. The rumours are harmful for the country. We requested the social media giant to remove some posts or deactivate some pages, but we did not get any response.”

In Bangladesh, Facebook has minimum 35 million users.

Earlier, the Bangladesh government requested the Facebook to set up offices in Bangladesh.

In a meeting with the telecoms minister in September, 2019 Facebook officials agreed to appoint local representative in Bangladesh and pay taxes to state exchequer.

Global digital platforms such as Google, Facebook and Youtube are getting advertisements from Bangladesh but are not paying taxes to Bangladesh government.

Can Bangladesh just block the IP address of those source?

Don't think that is possible. The problem is with unverified Facebook posts by Facebook users. Bangladesh govt. has to depend on the cooperation of Facebook to censor them. The other alternative is to ban Facebook altogether in Bangladesh.

IP address can be block by internet provider companies. They need compliant government orders.

Once Bangladesh blocked Facebook. Then Facebook users increased I believe. All people used Facebook regularly with vpn. Forbidden fruits are always very tasty.

Most of us use shared IP, and very few people use real IP and all for business or work purpose. So if you want to block shared IP you have to block many users who are innocent! And what about mobile Internet users who use it with PC through mobile hotshot?

Can you block mobile Internet IP? Those IPs are dynamic and change when you disconnect from Internet!

what are you talking about.
ISPs know the person getting any ip/port for usage regardless its shared or 'real' ip.. they bill the person... they can just lookup timestamp of the website he browsed and tally the website data with their core DPI. Next thing even police can show up at that user's address, let alone blocking his connection.

If your ISPs are not following the SOPs and not keeping track of its customer details like name/ ID# /address/phone# than you cant keep a check on the menace.

Facebook wants you to either grant them 100% access i.e. business opportunity or kiss them goodbye ,thats where it becomes difficult to deal with them..Block all proxy sites. There is a way to keep check on vpn as well.

Okay if it's possible then it's good. So Bangladesh govt should follow the path. Read in news of the daily jugantor that a man in badda is arrested by cyber police who was spreading rumor through Facebook.

Ps: Can they track them too who use prepaid connection and use Internet?

I support a large Internet firewall in Bangladesh - for the simple reason that we have lots of non-well-wishers of our country abroad (some in the neighborhood and some in the West) and they'd love to have a chance to disrupt our economy.

We do have the capability now - but more detailed monitoring and control should be implemented. I am aware of what exists but cannot talk about it in detail.

That said- selective shutdown of internet for mobile users should also be implemented per region because of SMS texting by terrorists and other bad actors.

We can take lessons from China in this regard. They have their own controlled texting (SMS) providers like Sina Weibo etc. We should have our own providers like Facebook as well.

@Beast your thoughts.

Authoritarian control does some good sometimes, and this is certainly one of them.

As Lee Kuan Yew (Former Leader of Singapore and one of my heroes) said - Semi-educated Asians are not ready for Western style Liberty and Democracy, at least not yet. Those who promote such thoughts do not wish the best for our country in terms of economic growth.

For example CPD and World Bank are agents of keeping Bangladesh at lower rungs of development indefinitely.

We need a LOT more control at this time to grow our economy...

Ban Facebook in Bangladesh.

Facebook IS banned, depending on certain events. But not permanently. Facebook has their own problems in controlling the US political scenario - as we all know.

But Facebook is monitored pretty well locally (and the rumor-mongers frequently apprehended).

There is no issues with young people posting pictures and Bhabis giving status on the latest dawat and happenings. That you have to allow most of the time.
