Bangladesh is set to honour former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for his outstanding support for the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971 when he was a Lok Sabha member.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman familiar with the process said Bangladesh will hand over Vajpayee’s “Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to the country from June 6.

Mr. Vajpayee, who is unwell, could not visit Bangladesh to receive the honour.

“From the very beginning of the Liberation War (in 1971), he (Vajpayee) took a firm stand in favour of Bangladesh’s independence... as the then president of Bharatya Jana Sangh and Lok Sabha member he mobilised campaign at home and in international arena for the rights of Bangladesh’s people,” the official said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also approved a proposal to honour the families of the members of Indian armed forces for sacrificing their lives for the cause of Bangladesh’s independence.

Officials said Dhaka decided to send the martyrs’ family members a letter alongside a certificate to be signed by Ms. Hasina expressing tributes for their contributions.

Indira Gandhi was the first “foreign friend” to be conferred with the ‘Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award’. Sonia Gandhi received the honour on her behalf in 2012 at a special ceremony.

Most of the subsequent recipients were also from India with President Pranab Mukherjee being one of them.

Bangladesh is set to confer Bangladesh Muktijhuddha Sammanana on former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in recognition of his contribution to Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971.

‘We will hand over the crest to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Dhaka conferring
the Bangladesh Muktijhuddha Sammanana [Bangladesh Liberation War Honour],’ liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Huq told New Age on Sunday.

Bangladesh Liberation War Honour is the second highest state honour, conferred to foreign friends who played a crucial role for Bangladesh’s independence.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee was Indian prime minister from 1998 to 2004.

Shahriar Kabir, a member of the government’s national committee on bestowing the honour to foreign friends, said that Vajpayee, who was then a member of parliament from Jana Sangha, had been vocal in lending support to the liberation war in the 1971 and had also campaigned for the recognition of Bangladesh as an independent country.
He is the only BJP leader in the list of Indians named for the honour so far.

‘Vajpayee is one of those Indian friends of Bangladesh who are not keeping well, and cannot come to receive the award in Dhaka. So, we decided to hand over the crest to Modi,’ said a joint secretary of the liberation war ministry.
In seven phases between 2011 and 2013, Bangladesh honoured 338 personalities and institutions out of the primarily selected 562 from 30 countries for the contribution they had made to the liberation war.

Bangladesh Freedom Honour, the highest award, was conferred only on former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi, Bangladesh Liberation War Honour was conferred on 15 foreign heads of state and Bangladesh Friends of Liberation War Honour was conferred on 322 personalities and institutions.

So far, 226 Indians and Indian organisations have been honoured by the government. All of them had travelled to Bangladesh personally or sent their family to receive the award in Dhaka.

AKM Mozammel Huq said that his ministry would hold a meeting on Tuesday on the preparation of the ceremony.

PM's acceptance speech at the conferment of the Bangladesh liberation war honour on Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today recalled the immortal words of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who, in a speech in Parliament on 6th December 1971, had said that the friendship between India and Bangladesh was like a bond which would not break under any pressure, and would never be the victim of any diplomacy. He said this message of Shri Vajpayee had to be passed on to succeeding generations. In his acceptance speech, after the conferment of the Bangladesh liberation war honour on Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Shri Narendra Modi described Shri Vajpayee as a far-sighted leader, who had said that history was being rewritten, as the blood of Indian soldiers flowed together with the Mukti Jodhas, for the liberation of Bangladesh.

The Prime Minister said that it would have been wonderful if Shri Vajpayee had been present to receive this honour himself. He expressed hope that Shri Vajpayee would soon become well, and guide everyone once again.

The Prime Minister said that though he had entered politics quite late, he had been one of the many youth activists who had come to Delhi in response to Shri Vajpayee's call for Satyagraha for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. He described himself as one of the crores who wanted this vision to be realized.

Another award for a great leader!

One of his famous quotes-

Mere prabhu!
Mujhe italni unchai kabhi mat dena
Gairon koa gale na laga sakoon
Itani rukhai
Kabhi mat dena

A great friend of BD. Next BD announced to award every Indian soldiers who took part in that war.
I hope they give an award to us for not winning the war. It will be an honour to get an award for a 44 years old story...
