Bangladesh imports 67 per cent from 10 countries with China on top of them

FE Online Report
The country’s 67 per cent imports are now coming from top 10 source countries, according to the latest statistics of Bangladesh Bank.

In the last fiscal year (FY16), total exports were valued at $36.75 billion, exclusive of that of the Export Processing Zones.

The actual import payments, in free on board value, stood at 39.71 billion in FY16, according to the central bank statistics.

China is the largest source of imports followed by India.

In the last fiscal year, imports from China stood at $9.64 billion which was $8.23 billion in FY15. Thus, China’s share in total imports stood at 26 per cent.

Bangladesh’s imports from India, however, came down to $5.45 billion in the last fiscal year which was $5.82 billion in FY15.

Nevertheless, it accounts for 15 per cent share in the country's imports from across the world.

Singapore is the third largest import source.

Imports from the city-state stood at $1.96 billion in the last fiscal year followed by Japan from where products worth $1.60 billion were imported.

Indonesia ranked fifth as an import partner from where goods worth $1.22 billion were purchased.

Imports from Singapore, Japan and Indonesia, however, declined as a whole in the last fiscal compared to FY15.

The United States (US) has emerged as the sixth largest import source.

The value of imports from there jumped by around 46 per cent in the last fiscal year to $1 billion from $690.6 million in FY15.

Brazil is the eighth, Malaysia the ninth and Hong Kong the tenth largest importer partner of the South Asian country.

Bangladesh’s value of imports from these countries stood at $952.3 million, $951 million and $806.6 million respectively in the last fiscal year.

Only 15% and the online Indians think We are entirely dependent On India.

If there are idiots who say that, their stupidity - I am sorry to say this - is only more than those who read them and take them seriously.

But you are now a true-blue Brit, korta. Where would you stub your neo-Caucasian toe on something as vulgar as a south Asian product?

Korta? If this is the offensive korta that I'm thinking then slightly weird coming from a Bengali, not to worry, you will be employing more Hindi words soon. And don't worry about South Asian products my countrymen have opened up many cash & carrys all with in a stones throw. Bangladeshi food items are easily accessible within a couple of seconds.

What would you think about that isn't offensive? And I already speak two dialects of Hindi, to match two dialects of Bengali, thank you very much. I'm not worried about South Asian products being readily available, I'm worried about your fastidious offended reactions to these smelly, desi products.

India should do more. India is surrounding BD from all sides and still it is not no.1 trading partner of theirs!!

Surprised not to see Saudi Arabia at top 10. Doesn't Saudi give us oil at a subsidized rate?

No, it's the way you spelt it. Maybe it's the right way of spelling it but my Pakistani friends pronounce it "kor-tha", with a bit of emphasis on the "tha". Bangladeshi products may not fall under "smelly desi products", the asian brand items I buy are usually Shazans, Nazmas, Tahira & Pran etc etc.

My initial post did state Indian products/brands & avoiding them in BD, how this has diverted to desi products (which refers to the food products of India, Pakistan & BD) I haven't a clue.

Just teasing you, stop taking it so seriously.

But yes, I gave you a term of respect, and you went round and round, sniffing at it gingerly. Not nice. :D not that it affects me, just shows how some people like to believe the worst. Of themselves and those addressing them.

Thanks for the respect. Don't take it personal, it is a forum at the end of the day. I'm not on here frequently but when I do get free time, I surf on here for a couple of hours.

Oh, nothing personal. Just a thoughtful reflection that a 66 year old professor calls a younger person korta, and is given so much more to think about. Nothing personal at all.
