Army officers transferred to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on deputation from now on must undergo a mandatory training course at the frontier as part of a massive reform of the border force since the 2009 rebellion, officials and reports said yesterday.

"The 20-day training for army officers who come to serve the BGB will minimise errors in future," the mass circulation Samokal newspaper quoted the frontier guards chief Major General Anwar Hussain as saying in an interview.

He added that the army officers would begin their work in BGB after the training when they would have to stay at border posts for eight days to gain direct experience about the modus operandi of the border guards.

The paramilitary BGB soldiers are recruited directly, but officers at the higher command come from the army to lead the frontier force, which witnessed its greatest tragedy in 2009 from February 25 to 26 when 57 military officers serving the force were killed by rebel border guards.

I hope, Bangladesh Army Officers finally will get rid of their British colonial mentality before they start serving the BGB. Apart from all those assumed political connections, real grievances among the Jawans of BDR caused a rebellion in 2009. The Officers and their arrogant wives behave as if the jawans are their domestic servants. The wives force many of the Jawans to cook, do dishwashing, marketing, floor cleaning etc. for the house.

This is what was practiced in the british Indian Army, and then in the Pakistan Army. And this culture has trickled down to BA through the officers' previous employment with the PA. In the border outposts, many of the Jawans have also to tend for their officers' milk cows.

I hope, BA will train their officers not to behave like a colonial master. In England, it is certainly no more a practice. So, should it be discontinued in the BA. If a military officer is entitled to domestic servants, the GoB must provide civilian people for that kind of work. Failing to do so will only harm the military establishment. Major rebellions occured in 1975 in BA's Dhaka Cantonement at the instigation of Major Taher, and in 2009 at Pilkhana BDR HQ.

Send them to Pakistan, we will train them for free.....

No thank you. This training is for the BA to get to know the BGB better and increase communication. Also, as eastwatch mentioned, this training is for the BA to learn that they cannot discriminate against the BGB members. Hopefully this training will get the BA to become more respectful to BGB.

British style discrimination is not limited in the BGB by their officers from BA. It is same also in the army. When on workplace, it is understood that a kind of discipline must be maintained in order to establish the chain of command. But, the Jawans are maltreated by their officers' and the officers' mean minded wives. There was a mutiny organized by Col. Taher in 1975. He used the grievances of army Jawans to initiate the rebellion. Similar things as happened in Pilkhana happened during that rebellion, too. BA officers must be trained to behave properly with their sub-ordinates.

So what this new Awami regime driven training will do? Train officers how not to protect Bangladesh and Bangladeshis when BSF continue intruding and killing? And just send protest note but not taking any action when BSF occupy Bangladeshi land? What is new - oh this no action write note training will satisfy eastwatch indian chamcami business.

@ The officers of Bangladesh Army are well trained how to handle a critical situation. There were almost 22/24 military coups and counter coups and through these coups we have learned many things.

@ It is true that we have many customs of British Army but through the ages many bad customs have gone away. At present in our army we donnot have any Batman system but still this system is prevailing in the Indian and Pakistan army.

@ It is good that once an army officer is posted to BGB, he had to undergo through 20 days training at the BOP. This is good. But the question is what would happen to senior officers once they are posted to BGB ? Well junior officers can very well go to the BOP and stay there.

@ The question is it was not the orientation training but problem lies some where else. This sort of orientation training was there during Ershad's times. At that times all the newly posted officers(fresh from BMA) just after 6 months were compulsory to serve in BDR in Chittagong Hill Tracts for six months.

@ What non-sense eastwatch is suggesting ????? India and their stooges always wants that Army officers should not command the BDR/BGB. This was one of the main demand of Peelkhana incident but due to the stiff resistance of the senior army officers it could not be implemented. So, it remained, "Adhura".

It comes from the British days.
Some of the soldiers are used by officers as their private servants/butlers/cooks.

Batman military

In case of BA and BGB/BDR the batman system is not fficially endorsed, but there is tendency by the officers to use the Jawans as their domestic servants. It has caused rebellions in the past. Pilkhana is the latest, although I assume the Jawans had other grievances, too.

Mate, in India at least, this is a very outdated and rarely employed practice. The IAF/IN have already outlawed such practices, the IA hasn't but still this decadent system is pretty much unheard of today.

Since this outdated batman system is still followed in the army, therefore, BA officers will need a kind of Orientation Course before they join their posts in the BGB. I do not think, this is the only point that triggered rebellion in Pilkhana. There were reasons such as bribe taking by the BGB troops from the smugglers. BA officers do not endorse this, which makes BGB Jawans angry with the BA officers.

This is one reason that BGB troops demanded officers to be directly recruited by or promoted from their own organization. BA cannot accept this because it will cause a breakdown of chain of command, and the cases of smuggling will increase in the border without BA officers supervising their acts.

BA and BGB will have to learn how to live as mutually supporting organizations and not as rivals.

Where is the proof of your above claim?

Bangladesh army needs to hire more military psychologists to tackle the problem of mistreating subordinates.

Where is the proof of your above claim?

BA officers are in on this, I have an uncle that was a lt. colonel who recently retired, he has reportedly made a lot of cash from serving in the bdr.
