  • Leonardo’s KRONOS family of radar products are multi-functional, multi-mission solutions

  • The KRONOS LAND radar is highly mobile and quick to deploy: it can be brought into operation in the field in just 15 minutes
The Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) has ordered Leonardo’s KRONOS LAND radar to provide air surveillance, allowing operators to detect and track targets in tactical environments. Leonardo has announced the contract at BIDEC (Bahrain International Defence Exhibition and Conference) tri-service exhibition, which is taking place at Manama (Baharain) from 28 to 30 October.

Leonardo will also supply communications equipment, twelve months of technical support services, spare parts and a comprehensive training programme for Bangladeshi Air Force personnel with modules in Italy and Bangladesh. As a complete package, this contract will enable the BAF to develop a long-term maintenance capability and preserve the functionality of the system.

Completely designed and developed by Leonardo, the KRONOS LAND is a multi-functional, multi-mission 3D radar for air surveillance and defence, based on latest-generation Full Active-Electronically-Scanned-Array (AESA, also known as E-scan) technology. Leonardo has sold more than 40 KRONOS family systems worldwide.

The contract to supply KRONOS LAND to the Bangladesh Air Force bolsters Leonardo’s presence in Bangladesh. It follows the earlier provision of the RAT31 surveillance system to the BAF for early warning and air defence.

still no fighters :(

still no fighters :(
Do you guys want BAF planes to be strafed and destroyed while still on the ground? Why put the cart before the horse? The military needs the supporting radars, surveillance equipment/planes, and short, medium and long-range land-based missiles first lacking which the jets will be like ducks sitting on the tarmacs without knowing wherefrom the attacks are coming.

This is a very positive development and we should be optimistic. In Sha Allah, something substantial is coming. Otherwise, why bother with all these infrastructure and advanced jet trainers?

Here is how the system works-

It’s just that there are so many disparate sources claiming these things indicating a major shift.

Whether it’s the news about the 2 agreements between the US and Bangladesh.

Or army officials basically stating what we here are all thinking about the economy improving allowing BD to afford quality hardware.

Or the apparent emphasis in getting Western sourced items in released tenders.

Or reports from official sources, for example the U.K. Bangladesh strategic dialogue in May frankly stating the U.K. is ready to assist BD in its requirements for a high caliber multirole fighter.

Or most recently the reports that Bangladesh is seeking Apaches.

Take your pick.

All very encouraging that Bangladesh is finally taking it’s armed forces seriously.

I was just reading what the Army chief was talking about in the other thread. Yes, there are far too many factors out in the open to be a baseless rumor. While it may still take a few years to have the hardware in hand, all these developments are definitely positive and purposeful. The recent acquisitions in terms of improving radar coverage and buying intermediate and advanced jet trainers are all pointing towards the arrival of quality fighter jets.

Add to that the overhaul of the 8 MiG-29.

Looks like they will be needed for a bit longer indicating a wait for new fighters.

Making a US/EU source more likely due to the wait.
