Bangla offers special zones to Indian companies

NEW DELHI: Special economic zones may be struggling in the country, but Bangladesh is offering an exclusive export processing zone for Indian companies to garner investment from its giant neighbour.

Amid signs of rapidly rising trade between the two neighbours, sources said, Indian companies are looking to step up investment too.

To sweeten the deal, tax holidays for three to 10 years are on offer.

"There are 10-12 export processing zones in Bangladesh and we expect Indian companies to come. Trade relations are improving and we have said we can allow Indian companies to takeover some of the EPZ's," said a senior Bangladesh government official.

This is not the first time that BD is wooing Indian companies. But, Indian companies cannot yet be encouraged before the infrastructure is ready and power plants are producing more electricity. GoB has last year taken Indian business people to an EPZ in Iswardy, but I do not know about any tangible results.

Tax exemptions are required to attract in investors, singapore did just that to build their economy. However, a tax exemption of 10 years is too long.

Bangladesh is different from indian states. Our decision making will affect the whole country, rather than certain parts of the country.

Buddy only difference is, in India we have Federal setup, in Bangladesh you don't have federal setup. But the core is tax exemption draws more companies generating more jobs and prosperity. Many Himalayan States of India has dangerous roads and zero rail connectivity but they attract more investment because of Tax Exemption offered by respective state governments.

We have given such a zone to a S Korean company. However, India is unpopular in BD - except with the BAL people. That is the issue here.

India is also a developing country they can invest in their own country. Indians bring their companies would just kill the local competetion and businesses. The bigger hold the Indian corporations will have over Bangladesh the bigger politically influencial they will become.

First of all, Companies go for diversified Business in different countries as local production is always profitable than bringing goods from distant places. Many Indian company in other country or vice-versa as some countries are expertise in certain sector and lack expertise in certain field.

The things I always say that If Indian company enter in Bangladesh there would be unnecessary issues being made by opportunist politicians as just made in Case of Akhura-Agartala Rail link with worlds "puppet State" or "Indian masters". And you can have your investments from China, South Korea, it is going to make no difference for India.
