Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (left) and PM Narendra Modi have worked to improve bilateral ties with respect to security.
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Under Hasina govt, India found a partner to keep Pakistan's plans to destabilise region at bay
  • Various insurgency groups in Northeast that found havens across the border were rooted out
  • Militancy dropped drastically during Hasina's rule as compared to the Zia rule.
India's major victory, even ahead of the polls in Bangladesh, is that New Delhi has not been part of the political discourse there and has managed to keep out of the domestic bickering at the hustings.

One of the biggest elections in South Asia that will have a direct impact on the security scenario in India is the 11th parliamentary election in Bangladesh.

While trying to maintain a low profile, India has been keenly observing developments in the neighbouring country.

The Narendra Modi administration has learnt that it has to deal with whoever comes to power in any country and changing the fates of nations only lead to bitter experiences.

While India is prepared to work with any party that comes to power in Bangladesh, New Delhi has had a very good run in the past decade when it comes to security and stability in the Northeast, and tackling insurgency. The same cannot be said of Bangladesh under Khaleda Zia.

The Awami League, led by 71-year old Sheikh Hasina came to power in 2009 ousting Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government. This was repeated in 2014 amid boycott by the BNP.

Hasina's second term has been marred by authoritarianism, muzzling of dissent and reports of grave human rights violations. Even the main Opposition has been sent behind bars and disallowed from contesting.

Hasina might need major course-correction to reflect a true democracy in Bangladesh. But, it is also important to contain the forces who support anti-Bangladesh extremist elements.

In the Hasina government, India found a partner to keep Pakistan's plans to destabilise the region at bay. Various insurgency groups in the Northeast that found havens across the border during the Zia government were rooted out. Militancy dropped drastically during Hasina's rule as compared to the Zia rule.

On Hasina's watch, all the important leaders of militant groups were either caught and tried by Dhaka, or handed over to India. These include United Liberation Front of Assam General Secretary Anup Chetia.

With the changing global and regional scenario, India has to be vigilant of what the change in Dhaka could mean. Intelligence sources say that Zia's son Tarique Rahman who is based in London - evading a life-term sentence in Bangladesh - is in regular touch with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence. The BNP is known to be close to the intelligence establishment in Pakistan and therefore it only spells trouble for India.

India can ill-afford trouble on both the western and eastern fronts. With the likely withdrawal of troops by the US from Afghanistan, and chances of Islamic militancy and Taliban only increasing in the country, things are only going to heat up for India at the western border. Strained ties with Pakistan have not helped matters.

Pakistan is waiting for Zia's return so as to find a partner to create problems for India. People like ULFA leader Paresh Barua are also in hiding and waiting for a change in government in Bangladesh.

While Zia and her party have tried to reach out to India, optics cannot secure borders and keep India's Northeast safe. It is in the return of a friendly government in Sheikh Hasina that India will find continuance of peace and stability in the east of India.

You need to post these in the indian section.

Indias security only matters to india which as an indian you clearly realise.

Indian security is not a pre-requite to BD security.

A great achievement from India!!! What a bargain...

BD's action items are the following:
  • Put all state agencies, machinery, policies and executions under the RAW, and occasionally surprise them with the performance (recent polls being an example)
  • Provide the "strategic depth" and "zero resistance path" vis-à-vis China's threat to the chickens neck and NE regions
  • Put her army in such a state that even the Burmese Army should be able to destroy it's resistance within a couple of days
  • Let the Indian workers remit back to India as much as possible. Officially it's $10b per year now. Indian folks in tourist visa can also work in BD without any problems whatsoever
  • Keep all the major industries, media, supply chains of all the necessary commodities etc. in the hands of the Indian syndicated mafia, so that they can charge 2 to 4x of the price in the world market. And, the "delta" goes to their pockets
  • Destroy the public education so that BD folks are only good for the menial jobs
  • Be extremely grateful Termites under India, and if anybody in BD shows even little disquiet crush them like Termites
  • And, the list goes on...

Their PMs also make good cooks for presidential palace stay....we can give day off for the regulars.

lol its sad that indians and their establishment always find security outside their country. their problems would resolve once they will start concentrating on their own country:tup:
