A COAL mine has collapsed in northern China, killing at least 21 people.

Two miners who were earlier trapped are now confirmed to have died.

Another 66 miners were rescued after the cave-in at a mine in Shenmu, Shaanxi province, the city government said in a statement.

87 miners were working underground when the roof collapsed at the Lijiagou coal mine at around 4.30pm local time.

Pictures on social media show a huge number of vehicles, many of which appear to be emergency responders, at the scene.

The mine is owned by Baiji Mining Company Ltd.

This was a 28.7% drop on the previous year.

But despite this improvement, last January the bureau said in a statement: "The situation of coal mine safety production is still grim."

In November, 22 people were killed after an explosion at a chemical factory in Hebei province.

Last month, seven miners were killed and three others injured in an accident at a coal mine in the country's southwest.

In October, 21 miners died in the eastern Shandong province after pressure inside a mine caused rocks to break up, blocking the tunnel and trapping workers.

Only one miner was rescued alive.

While in December 2016, 17 people were killed in a coal mine blast in Inner Mongolia region.

More recently, there have been efforts by the government to improve coal production conditions and crack down on illegal mines.

Coal mine owners need to be forced to invest in adequate mining safety.

Mining is one of the most risky jobs right now. Given excessive competition, corrupt politicians and poorly monitored and enforced mining policies in developing countries, mining is extremely dangerous.

I will pray for the families of 21 miners who died in this painful accident. May their spirits find peace in the World Beyond.

We are also having a mining rescue operation in Meghalaya right now here, and the state government is just PATHETIC. It has been a month and till now we haven't been able to pull out a single miner alive. Because it is an illegal mine and it has been caved in.

True, Mining is a tough profession anywhere, hopefully with the elections coming up people can raise the banner of Meghalaya and seek more help to look for survivors, or more likely, the remains of those that have perished. The people need to make life intolerable for those responsible if there is any hope of preventing similar tragedies in the future.

I pray the miners in China and India find peace in the afterlife, but I also pray the people do not forget them.

They've made improvements to automate it but there are still guys in the mines watching the machines.

The ceiling shoring seems to be the biggie. (This reminds me of an Aliens movie}
