Assam may seek Bangladesh's expertise to tackle flood, erosion

BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Guwahati October 17, 2011, 0:37 IST

Assam might seek neighbouring country Bangladesh’s help in tackling flood and erosion problem, said state’s Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Gogoi said that since the problems faced by Assam with regard to erosion and recovery of eroded land were same as those faced by the neighbouring country, the state government might approach Bangladesh seeking its expertise in this field.

Assam loses large swathes of land every year to river bank erosion and arresting the problem, besides recovering those lost lands, have becoming a challenging task for the state.

The chief minister said the experiment of using ‘geo-tubes’ in Dhakuakhana, situated in the north bank of river Brahmaputra, to arrest erosion has been successful and hence looks forward to using new technologies prevalent in other countries in tackling the flood and erosion problem of Assam. The two north bank districts of Dhemaji and North Lakhimpur face the maximum wrath of flood and erosion every year.

As per government statistics, the state has lost nearly 7 per cent of its agricultural land due to erosion since 1950.

Gogoi on Thursday had a detailed discussion with Jayati Chandra, Secretary of ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), regarding the flood and erosion problem of the state and ways and means of tackling it.

He also said that the state government was interested in developing river Brahmaputra as a viable waterway for commercial movement of goods. Gogoi said the state government would develop the necessary infrastructure to “channelize” the river. He said he would also take up the matter with the Brahmaputra Board and state’s water resource department.

This is a pretty good opportunity for Bangladesh to demonstrate the people of Assam that we really care for them. Bangladesh government should take appropriate approach to the people of NE India mainly to Assam where the people of Bengali origin who has ancestry in Bangladesh so that they can be assured that we care for them more then the GOI which promotes policy of hate to Bengali people of Assam and NE India and keep the people of NE India as ignored. Only GOI use NE india for geo political and strategic reason. In this regard Bangladesh government should keep the option open if NE India mainly assam break up from India so that at least merging them with Bangladesh option remain open through referendum or by other means or at least that new independent entity remain so friendly to Bangladesh.:D

Ha ha ha in your dreams...we people of assam may have some differences over some issues with the GOI that doesnot mean we assamese(which of course are indian) hate other indians..and if we ever break away from india(hypothetically) it would only increase your problem because most assamese hate bangladeshis. we have a huge population of muslim bengali whose nationality are highly doubtful and locals(us) highly resent it.

Only GOI use NE india for geo political and strategic reason... I don`t know what this is suppose to mean, i voted for my representative in the govt. last time so.......if you mean by relative economic backwardness then we have ourselves to blame for meddling into idiotic revolutionary movements in 70 and 80 which hampered our development alot .however thing are changing extremely fast here hope fully we will catch up with rest of the nation in a decade or so(economically speaking)

Bangladesh may be submerged in Bay of Bengal sooner or later. And assamese may not join you in your watery grave.

We don't need to do anything except develop our nation. NE already look up to us, they hope to be like us, all we need to develop further. NE will snatch one day out of frustration. It just matte of time.

Just a question, how did bangladesh tackled the flood? Because the last thing i heard in July 2011,The homes of more than 20,000 people have been completely destroyed by the floodwaters with another 84,000 homes partially damaged. Heavy flooding in southeastern Bangladesh has forced more than 20,000 people from their homes in Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf districts, say local authorities. When the Bakkhali and Matamuhuri rivers burst their banks most of the displaced sought refuge in the more than 30 cyclone shelters in the low- lying area. The newly displaced add to the more the 400,000 people already forced from their homes and unable to return due to rising floodwaters. When they will be able to return remains to be seen.
