2011-02-22 Hinduja Group's newly-floated Ashok Leyland Defence Systems Ltd (ALDS) and German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) GmbH Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Tuesday for development of advanced defence systems for India and others. The scope of the deal will initially include the development of armoured wheeled vehicles, recovery vehicles, artillery and combat systems, bridge laying systems and other similar products.

As per the understanding, the German company will provide the technology and the technical assistance that will be required for the development of these defence systems by the Indian company. Hinduja group's flagship company and commercial vehicles major Ashok Leyland holds 26 percent in the newly-formed ALDS with a mandate to design and develop defence logistics and tactical vehicles, defence communication and other systems.

Speaking about the deal, ALDS chairman V. Sumantran said: 'This strategic partnership seeks to harness the formidable skills of both companies, namely, the technological bandwidth of KMW and our approach to innovations aimed at cost advantage. For ALDS, this brings a new range of product opportunities with which we hope to fulfil India's growing defence needs and over time to address select overseas markets.'

According to Ashok Leyland officials, ALDS is a new company and formed by hiving off of the former's defence business. Ashok Leyland's defence business consists of supply of vehicle kits to the army's vehicle factory at Jabalpur and fully-built vehicles.

indeed a good news....

Ashok Leyland Defence Systems (ALDS), a newly formed company in which the Hinduja flagship Ashok Leyland holds 26% stake, has formed a strategic alliance with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG, Munich, Germany, at the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) at Abu Dhabi on Tuesday to co-operate in the development of advanced defence systems for the Indian defence establishment as well as other defence forces worldwide. The scope of the co-operation will initially include the development of armoured wheeled vehicles, recovery vehicles, artillery and combat systems, bridge laying systems and other similar products. ALDS brings to this strategic alliance the expertise and experience of designing and developing defence vehicles that has made Ashok Leyland the largest supplier of logistics vehicles to the Indian Army with over 60,000 of its Stallion vehicles forming the Army’s veritable logistics backbone.

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) will provide the technology and the technical assistance that will be required for the development of these defence systems. A 170-year-old company, KMW leads the market for highly protected armoured wheeled and tracked vehicles. The armed forces of over 30 nations worldwide rely on the German firm’s systems.

Ashok Leyland is back. I hope they produce something good so that their new product could be inducted again in huge number inArmy like their Stallion. IA has more than 40,000 Stallions...its huge.

German firm is just trying to get hold of the Indian defense market.

.
Hope they do something to ramp export too.

Nice to hear private participants coming with JVs.. already Leyland has a good order with army regarding trucks.. they should be invited to join light artillery and guns.

I think it might have relation to FICV project...They might showcase :

There are over 30,000 Stallions running around in Army.... One of the highest in total when compared to TATA... They have a Wide range of Products to Offer Like the MPV and LCV

Great news!

If possible, I would love to see this combo:

AGM

As I always said, the best choice for IA self-propelled artillery!

Is KMW participating in IA's artillery contract ??/

Not directly, Rheinmetall is offering a wheeled howitzer based on Denels G6 with the gun of the PZH 2000 (jointly developed by Rheinmetall and KMW), which is the same used in AGM.
However, I'm not sure how good the chances of them are with Denel and Rheinmetall beeing black listed, besides the way to heavy weight of th G6, but I still think the AGM would be a great solution for IA.

Very good news, this is how we can develop military industrial base. The reason it is happening now is because Indian private companies now realize they can make money and government is supportive of privitization. It is good news overall, happy times to come in next five years.

I think, IA should have given their requirement to these companies and asked them to develop a new artillery. Nobody is passing their requirement. Even M777 failed the tests. They will accept it because we have a very big requirement of artillery.

I am actually waiting for Ashok Leyland's armored vehicle. Fennek 2's Indian version will be a great product.
