USA will not meddle in the South China Sea territorial dispute on behalf of tiny Vietnam or Phillipines, but they will make alot of sweet talks to enhance her diplomatic and military clout while spoiling the relationship between the neighbouring countries, it's all about gaining political and economic influence at the expense of these territorial disputes. In the end Phillipines and VIetnam will lose, USA will gain, and they will still never directly confront China, because they know the consequences, they want to gain a bigger economic and military foothold in these countries and continue to create animosity so they can grab a bigger share of the future Asian economic pie. Naturally Vietnam will have no hope of ever competing with China over island claims that are not within Vietnam's own territorial waters, Vietnam absurd claim is the weakest among all nations and they have no historical ties to these islands, so in the end Vietnam will get nothing, a country that is economically dependent on China, trying to roar like a tiger has really been turning down their volume in the recent weeks and waking up to reality, not to rely on an unreliable third party who cannot save them, now it is Philippines who's making all the noise wanting to get third parties involve, it is no problem, China have all the time in the world to wait it out, USA will not declare support for the Philippines over these territorial disputes, they may be a blow-hard and big mouthed, but they also know where the red line is. Philippines is always a pawn, Vietnam is a willing pawn, over-ambitious and not knowing her limitations and reality.

I would not be so sanguine. China has not taken stiff action against Vietnam and Philippines yet even though they occupy China's reefs and drill for oil further and further out from their shores. The time does run against China if we don't start drilling. Yet we cannot start drilling because our drilling platform would likely be destroyed by a coalition led by the US.

We are waiting to take action because our military has not yet completed its modernization. A few critical weapons systems will enter service over the course of the decade that would make it possible for China to defend against US navy and air force and also project power deep into the South China Sea. Once our military modernization is complete, then we will take back our islands and control the waters again.

If KMT wins in Taiwan, China can enjoy another 4 years of strategic progress in Taiwan. So, China would probably avoid a direct naval confrontation with other countries until the end of a second KMT term in 2015. That's why neighboring countries are moving quickly to drill further oil from their shores while China in a passive position waiting to take action.

Your post is beyond stupid. With or without the U.S involved or backup in this issue, Viet Nam was, is, and will continue to exert our sovereignty over these islands. We're trying to milk whoever we can and internationalize this issue as much as we can, we don't lose anything out of this; it's not like we are sending troops to Iraq to fight for the U.S's cause
