Karachi:

In its continued effort to rehabilitate last year’s flood victims, the Pakistan Army has successfully undertaken a number of housing projects in Sindh and the keys to these homes were handed over to needy recipients during a ceremony held on Thursday, according to a press release.

Corps Commander Lieutenant General Muhammad Zahir Ul Islam formally presented these homes to the flood victims.

A Hyderabad division under 5 Corps Karachi has so far given 64 families from three villages in Dadu and 270 families from Thatta newly constructed homes in compounds equipped with a number of mosques, schools, basic health units as well as ample water supply.

Islam also handed over the keys for 59 houses to flood victims in the village of Katey Jakhran and Ismail Memon, Thatta. These families will also have access to a local school, a children’s park as well as a mosque. Another housing complex consisting of 19 homes was presented to the village of Abdullah Pusio in Dadu, which also came equipped with a mosque, a boys’ school and four water supply points.

The lieutenant general lauded the performance of the Army during and after the devastating floods.

This is something the NATO or Americans wont do...they will give a big handout to the political leadership which will never trickle down to the masses..PA is doing the relief work at grass root level..directly benifiting the effected people..Thats why WOT should be done by PA on their own accord without American intrusion..PA can do it best..

Because the military has experience of quick reconstruction, which they have proven time and again, on UN peacekeeping operations.

That is actually a great point. I will agree with this.

However, these projects should be completed with civilian involvement.

Doesn't the military work for the civilians? Humanitarian work is done by armies all over the world.

Humanitarian work during times of disaster is one thing, using resources to provide and create for the population as part of a longer post-disaster recovery is quite another. And besides, it would be naive to say that in Pakistan the military works for the civilians.

At least they are helping.

When was the last time you saw the Pakistani government do anything of this sort?

Yes, I agree they are helping the local population, but the price that the while nation pays for it in the longer run is not worth it, as has been shown time and again for Pakistan.

Why is the FWO/PA involved in these civil domain projects? This should NOT be the job of the Army.

You keep asking all he time that who's gonna step up to the plate and when someone does, you question the logic of it. Can't we just sit back and relax for a while and let the good spread its wings over the already demoralized people ?

Because the Army steps up to the plate, and then proceeds to gobble up the whole dinner! :D

Ok, I am sitting back, quite relaxed, but there is no magical good that will spreads its wings over a demoralized people UNLESS THE PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES!
