Khulna, Apr 12 (bdnews24.com) — Police have allegedly tortured a nine-year-old boy for stealing a rod.

Human rights activists alleged that the torture on the child, 'Belal', was perpetrated at Khulna Sadar Police Station around 1:30pm on Tuesday.

When informed, reporters rushed to the police station. But they saw the child sitting on a chair normally.

Jamshed Alam of Oporajeyo Bangladesh and Kakoli Begum of Bangladesh Manabadhikar Bastabayan Sangstha told the reporters that sub-inspector Moniruzzaman Khan beat Belal in the OC's room.

The two rights organisations have their employees at all police stations of the country to protect violation of human rights by police. Jamshed and Kakoli were deployed in the police station.

When the reporters arrived, Khan tried to take the child outside the police station. But the reporters did not let it happen. When Khan took Belal to the railway station area, the journalists saw and stopped them.

Belal told the reporters that locals in Gollamari area held and handed over him to the police after beating him for the theft.

"I was very hungry…so took away a piece of rod as I wanted to buy a bread after selling the rod. But the locals held, beat and handed over me to the police," a crying Belal told the reporters.

Showing his hands, he said, "My eyes were tied with a piece of cloth and hands with chain," he said.

"I was also given electric shock," he added.

Khan and OC S M Kamruzzaman, however, denied the allegations saying that he was only frightened when they asked him to tell the name of his associates.

Kamruzzaman said, "The boy admitted that he was connected with eight thefts. He was not tortured, only interrogated."

Jamshed said Moniruzzaman recently took part in a workshop on children's rights organised by Oporajeyo Bangladesh.

The organisation's research officer Bharati Basu said the country signed United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

It was clearly stated in Articles 37 and 40 of the convention that police cannot frighten children in any situation. "They cannot behave with a child as they do with an accused in a criminal case."

"Same thing was said in the Children's Act 1974. The Children Protection Act – 2010 has been passed by the cabinet recently which was formulated in line with UNCRC," she said.

Another official of the organisation, Mahbub Alam Prince told bdnews24.com in the evening that the child had been sent to the organisation's shelter home.

Can the mods change the heading? thanks

I agree that everybody has the freedom of action. But, is it okay if all of us start threads that are only one of many thousands of domestic news and have nothing to do in an international forum? This is not the first one, I have noticed many such news of the country that have no or a little debate value.

I also find someone starts many new threads almost everyday as if it is NOT a discussion forum but is only a NEWS RELAY STATION. I think, all of us have access to almost all the newspapers because we use Internet. Then why PDF should be used to spread all such news which have no debating or discussion values?

I would like to request the Moderators to erase a thread that has little value in an international discussion forum.

Torturing children at custody is a severe human rights issue and it should be handled with great speculation from international peers to create more awareness and shame for the govt. Although most of us debate about BNP and awami league, issues like this deserve the highest discussion as people are not doing enough to prevent this mishaps. Yes, there are many more atrocities which go unnoticed but it doesn't mean we should et this one go. And i don't personally think this is a news relay station but it is worth discussing.

Police have allegedly tortured a nine-year-old boy for stealing a rod.

This statement alone has more significance then hundred of threads where Bangladesh becomes a zillion dollar state in the future. Even if we want it or not, economy will keep on growing but what'll happen if we turn a blind eye to this sort of human rights abuse? While we cheer for RAB( Rapid Action Battalion) they take it as a blessing and kills innocent
teenagers at night without any second thought. There should be healthy
debates on topics like this from the civil society.

Although this news is about Police, I guess people should file
cases against the law breakers atleast its better to do something
rather than nothing.

Lastly try to understand this kid was only nine years old.

But, does this issue have anything to do in a defence forum? There are many other similar issues, such as stealing children, bending their legs by putting in a narrow space in jars. Or making them blind. Or also use girls as forced prostitutes. There are hundreds of atrocities with 12/13 yr old housemaids. There are so many social issues in a poor country like BD, but these are domestic issues. Should these be sent for discussion in a military forum like PDF? Sorry, I cannot accept a yes for an answer.
