In a time of debate over the extent of racism across the world triggered by the brutal murder of George Floyd in the USA, a similar incident came to light in our neighbouring country of Bangladesh.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • A Hindu Farmer of Gopalganj in Bangladesh, Nikhil was killed by ASI Shamim Hasan who kicked Nikhil's spine with his knees several times
  • As the world debates that racisim is not only the discrimination with the colour of the skin, the incident of Nikhil also shows an incident of religious minority persecution
  • As we stand in solidarity and against the discrimination against one George Perry Floyd of Minnesota, did we overlook the story of a Hindu farmer killed in our neighbouring country?
New Delhi: Quite recently, there was a lot of discussion as former India cricketer Irfan Pathan tweeted saying, "Racism is not restricted to the colour of the skin. Not allowing to buy a home in a society just because u have a different faith is a part of racism too... #convenient #racism". Many took to social media claiming that this was perhaps one of the vile forms of racism that the world is witnessing at the moment.

At the same time, the world erupted in massive protest and condemnation for the incident that happened in Minnesota, USA, on May 25. A man of colour, by the name of George Floyd, was murdered on a street of Minneapolis during an arrest attempt by the police. Terrifying videos soon surfaced all over social media as George Floyd kept pleading with the police handcuffed as a "white" police officer knelt over his neck. The whole of America and the world unitedly stood condemning the heinous act and spoke against the persecution on the basis of racial discrimination.

Nine days after that horrific incident another incident took place similar to that what the United States of America has witnessed. A Hindu farmer called Nikhil Talukdar in the Gopalganj district of Bangladesh met with the same fate. Around 11 in the morning as Nikhil and his friends were playing cards, ASI Shamim Hasan arrived with a local police "source".

As Shamim started interrogating the four, the three companions fled and Nikhil was caught by the ASI and his associate. In a similar manner in which George Floyd was killed, this farmer belonging to the minority Hindu community of the country was brutally assaulted by the police inspector. According to the statements published in The Daily Star newspaper, a popular English Daily of Bangladesh, it is clear on how ASI Shamim hit Nikhil's spine with his knees time and again as the two witnesses to the case, Milon Talukdar, Nikhil's cousin and a local called Jhantu recollected the horrors.

It is known to the world that Hindus consisted of 22 per cent of the total population of the province of Bangladesh in 1952, a number that had been depleted to 15 per cent to 1991 and in the 2011 census was numbered at just 8.5 per cent. There was significant news about the persecution of Hindus and ransacking of Hindu temples and houses. The United Nations Refugee Agency in a report published in 2018, July indicates that almost 50 temples and 1400 Hindu houses were destroyed in the early part of 2013. The death of Nikhil Talukdar yet failed to evoke among the international community a hatred and a heinous attack against a minority of a country.

As 32-year-old Nikhil collapsed under the knee of the ASI and later declared dead with severe injury in his backbone, the world fell silent. The distance between Minneapolis and Dhaka, where Nikhil breath his last is 7700miles and across the distance, no one stood, resisted and protested to an incident that shook the conscience of many. As condemnation spread across the length and breadth of the world as the netizens of our country protested the brutal killing of George Floyd, the story of Nikhil Talukdar, a Hindu farmer in a neighbouring country remained fell in the darkness, away from marches, candlelight protests and banners.

As we stand in solidarity and against the discrimination against one George Perry Floyd of Minnesota, did we overlook another instance and kept silent. As Irfan Pathan said many in India are questioning whether is this the character of "convenient racism"?

If thats the case then wonder how many George Floyds happen in India

Use of excessive force by Police in Bangladesh is nothing new, It is a fact of life and all Bangladeshi have come to terms with it. We avoid the police like the plague and pay whenever they ask to avoid any trouble.

Simply taking an incident and putting a communal spin on it will not work, I ask Mullick dada to go find something else to report about and to not half arse it.

The union porishod chairmain of Ramshil union is a Hindu by the name of Bimal Krishna Biswas, If there is any communal tinge to this deplorable act of violence, I believe Mr. Biswas will do the needful.

Bangladesh Police will beat and kill anyone they feel like and anyone they're ordered to kill, they will not ask about your religious affiliations, Infact they will not give you the time to talk before shattering your jaw.

You want proof? Watch the below video where BD police kill Islamist protesters in the heart of Dhaka City. Video is not for the faint of heart.

To hide your own sins, you don't need to colour everyone else!

Thank you for highlighting racism in Bangladesh.

Rohingyas are put under sterilization by the Hasina regime due to racism they face for having different taste in cuisine.

Every day there is a Muslim George Floyd in India.
The problem with these sanghi's crocodile tear for Bangladeshi hindus is that, they do not differentiate between Hindu victim of general mistreatment and abuse solely because of religion. The incidence is the case of police brutality, which do not discriminate religion in Bangladesh. This type of incidence happened numerous times against Muslims in Bangladesh. But sanghi charal from across the border only look for incidence against Hindus to vilify Bangladesh. As if, each of the 15 million strong Hindu community member in Bangladesh should be free from all kind of earthly trouble! These Bharati charals even count Hindu to Hindu crime in Bangladesh as 'Radical Muslim torturing Hindus' and publish statistics. If you investigate their so called number of persecuted Hindus in Bangladesh, most will be revealed as crimes which happened without any religious profiling most often committed by other Hindus. I know an incidence when two rival groups of Hindus clashed in a village in Bangladesh, during that clash, a temple got damaged. But Indian sanghi charal and their Bangladeshi agents falsely propagandized that incidence as 'Muslim extremists attacked Hindus and destroyed Temples'. Indian sanghi scums are deeply involved in plotting against Bangladesh. Story of Hindu persecution is their most potent weapon. They can not tolerate the truth that two independent Muslim countries were created by ripping apart Bharat Mata where ugly RSS scums has no place to display their rickety legs in khaki shorts. This is so intolerable.

Dude it will be nice to check author against the BJP/Bhakt bias meter, that source is probably a one man show with bunch of RSS feeds. Here are more to the article you posted.

Police brutality: Inquiry finds Gopalganj ASI guilty over death of farmer.

Md Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (media) of PHQ, confirmed it to media through a video message yesterday.

"We have conducted an immediate inquiry after the allegation of assaulting Nikhil Talukdar was raised against ASI Shamim Hasan of Kotalipara Police Station and the inquiry primarily found the allegation's authenticity," said Sohel Rana.

A murder case has already been filed with ASI Shamim as prime accused in the death of 32-year-old farmer Nikhil Talukdar, he said, adding that the ASI and another person were arrested and produced before the court.

"We want to make it clear that we will never hesitate in taking firm and strict action against any member subject to the veracity of any allegation," said AIG Rana..

@Black_cats bhai when you post something like this as a story, you are only giving credence to anti-Bangladesh propagandists (unfortunately mostly Hindu) both inside and outside Bangladesh to drag our name through the mud.

Hindu population decreased in Bangladesh not because of oppression, they found India to be a better place to settle in, get educated and have better job prospects in the years before the current decade. In fact, the idiot who wrote this propaganda piece will never tell you that Hindus have started to return en masse from WB to Bangladesh because of improved job prospects and because they are given much more senior plum jobs because of quota system. All top police and administration positions and appointments are disproportionately given to Hindu folks.

Of course this ba$tard Mullick forgot to mention this. Things will come to a head one of these days for these excesses, and Hasina herself will be responsible. Then you will really see a Hindu exodus for sure. Some people don't know the meaning of greed and the value of fairness. Allah does not like transgressors.

Things like this police abuse happen everywhere (even in the USA), and like @DalalErMaNodi and other folks have pointed out, they happen with way more intensity in the neighboring country. At least the police officer responsible was prosecuted (just like in the US), which is unthinkable in the neighboring country. Police in the neighboring country actually work hand-in-hand with criminals and communal goondas, as we have seen so clearly in videos.

Let's be responsible before we post such articles. Don't help the propagandists from the neighboring country.

The CAA bill in India finally brings to light what has been happening for decades. Shashi Tharoor claimed that Hindus from Pakistan and Bangladesh been claiming that abuse thing for decades to get Indian citizenship. We always hear that Hindu folks earn their money in Bangladesh but take their money to India, I am cool with that. If they come back for a better future , I am fine that too.

My point is whatever floats their boat.

Taking advantage of situation in both countries no one is arguing with.

However taking advantage of quotas in Bangladesh and floating false 'oppression' propaganda at the same breath one cannot agree on.

Agreed.
Unfortunately Indians only hear these fake stories of abuse in Bangladesh. In this forum you will constantly read Sanghis hurling numbers like how Hindu population in BD is going down. CAA is India's internal policy, its for the Indians to decide what is working for them and what is not.

Hindus, Christians and Buddhists of Bangladesh are losing their land too. I have seen numerous documentary and read many news where Catholic church, Buddhist temples and Hindu villages and temples are grabbed by Muslims.

Land grabbing might be one issue exclusive to minorities
