Seoul Weighs Shift in U.S. Military Ties
American and South Korean Leaders Plan New War Games and Strategy Sessions in Face of Rising Tensions With the North

South Korean defense strategists already are publicly pressing Mr. Lee to delay the planned 2012 transfer of operational control of the combined U.S.-South Korean fighting force to Seoul from Washington, arguing South Korea isn't prepared yet to oversee American forces.

Many in South Korea have viewed North Korea's million-man military as largely targeted at the U.S. South Korea's late President Roh Moo-hyun successfully pushed for the U.S. to lower it military profile in his country and to transfer control of the joint military command to South Korea's defense department.
Come 2015(Delayed from 2012 mentioned in the article thanks to lazy Korean president who was dumping all extra cash on building a grand canal in 4 years instead of taking over the C&C of US troops. 2015 is the final date as the US said they wouldn't wait anymore), the US troops in Korea falls under the command and control of Korean Defense Ministry, with all the war planning and command will be handled by the Korean side.

So the supposed "puppet" isn't really a puppet like certain people are imagining, caused by incorrect information circulating in Chinese Internet. So if you are wondering why ROK and US hold frequent drills, that's because Korean military need a practice in command and control of combined US/ROK forces under realistic war scenario to be ready by 2015.

Just a small mythbuster.

I never thought SK was a puppet.... It seems you feel a little bit like that, the US soldiers are there to protect you guys as far as i remember they died trying.
Don`t be ungrateful.

Belittling allies is a natural extension of criticism of the main target, in this case it is US, so of South Korea and Japan would be targeted as well. Understand that the critics are conscript rejects and most of whom came from men-only villages so what do they know about military affairs other than what the propaganda branch of the PLA tells them. Seriously...When they believe that China's infantile semicon industry is superior to South Korea's and Japan's despite evidences to the contrary, what else can we do but to

SK has good enough military to protect itself, unlike NK which are still using ww2 equipment. The US helped SK because we all know how much they hate communism. They will always start a war for this

Why should we NOT hate communism?

They will always start a war for this
And how many wars so far? Can we not argue that communists will always start a war against democrats?

I never thought SK was a puppet....
Chinese nationalist posters do.

Compared to Japan, SK is just a minor puppet.

Now, why would the US hand over the C&C of its troops over to a "puppet" of any sort?

Would the US hand over the command of its troops in Afghanistan to Afghan "puppet" government? Hell no.
Would China hand over the command of its troops deployed in Pakistan to Pakistani military if they were engaged in a hypothetical three-way war with India?(India vs Pakistan & China). Once again hell no.

What the above article tells you is that the real world is vastly different from the imaginary one drummed up on Chinese Internet. Any military competent enough to take operations control of the US troops in a wartime is no puppet.

US does not need to command the South Korean troops directly. It can already command them through its control of the South Korean civilian government.

So are you suggesting a command chain of "US government => Korean government => Korean Defense Ministry => US troops in Korea"?

What happened to "US government => US troops in Korea"?
