Akal Takht defers hearing on Amitabh plea on ’84 riots

The Akal Takht on Tuesday deferred indefinitely the case involving Amitabh Bachc-han’s alleged role in inciting violence in 1984 Sikh riots.

Earlier, the hearing was scheduled for December 22 but put off due to unavailability of Sikh high priests for this meeting. As many as five Sikh high priests were supposed to give their verdict on Bachchan’s plea.

Bachchan, in a sealed letter to the Akal Takht, had pleaded his innocence in the riots. He had sent the letter after facing criticism from various Sikh organisations about an invitation pertaining to inauguration of Khalsa Heritage complex, Virast-e-Khalsa, at Anandpur Sahib. As a result of this, he did not attend this function.

Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, president of Sikh Students Federation, said they were asked to come to the Akal Takht along with proof and witnesses, but after waiting for long, they were told that the matter could not be taken up due to some other issues. “We had brought the sealed letter from California-based Manjit Singh addressed to the high priests,” he added.

Manjit Singh, 52, who originally hails from Delhi and currently residing in California, had said in 1985 he had submitted a written statement to the staff of the then senior officer of Delhi Police regarding Bachchan’s provoking violence against Sikhs during the 1984 riots, but no action was taken.

It seems he had made some remarks against sikh community, inciting riots.
He was friend of Rajiv and congress then.

i remember those days i was 9 , in Delhi , dad was posted there. don't remember any one who can say they were guilt free. but i doubt amithab would have gone to such an extent.
