Dhaka, Jan 18 (bdnews24.com) Awami League favourites have won 27 while that of BNP 22 in 61 municipalities, showing a tough fight between the candidates of the two rival parties.
In the local polls held in 63 municipalities under Dhaka division on Monday, six Awami League renegade candidates and one BNP rebel also came out successful.
Besides, independent candidates won in five municipalities as the latest results came in.
Meanwhile, election results in Ghatail municipality were put on hold on Monday due to the postponement of results in one of its nine centres. The Awami League-backed candidate was leading in other eight centres.
Results in Kaliakoir municipality were hold too as polls in eight of the 28 centres were postponed due to voter list-related complications.
No Jamaat-e-Islami candidate nor of Jatiya Party could win any mayoral post in Monday's polls.
The voting began at 8am ended at 4pm.
The Election Commission expects that the turnout to be around 70 percent.
About the stay on elections at eight centres in Kaliakoir municipality, election commissioner Sohul Hussain said the matter would be investigated.
Polling at the centres was suspended following allegations from candidates and their agents of discrepancies between voters' names and the corresponding photographs.
The BNP, however, accused the ruling party of conspiring to manipulate the results.
There are around 2 million voters in the division.
Under the division, Awami League-backed candidates won the polls in Gopalganj Sadar, Tungipara and Kotalipara, Noria and Damudia, Netrakona Sadar, Durgapur and Kendua, Shibchar of Madaripur, Kishoreganj's Sadar, Kuliarchar and Karimganj, Mymensingh's Sadar, Trishal, Iswarganj, Bhaluka and Phulpur, Sherpur Sadar, Narsinghdi's Sadar and Monohordi and Islampur of Jamalpur, Tangail's Sadar, Kalihati, Shakhipur, Dhonbari and Bhuapur, Pangsha of Rajbari municipalities.
Awami League's rebel candidates won in Kalkini of Madaripur, Bhedarganj of Shariatpur, and Gafargaon, Muktagachha and Gouripur of Mymensingh and Dewanganj of Jamalpur.
BNP-backed candidates won Nalitabari, Nokla and Sribardi of Sherpur, Mohonganj of Netrakona, Nagarkanda and Boalmari of Faridpur, Manikganj's Singair, Katiadi, Bhairab, Bajitpur and Hossainpur of Kishoreganj, Munshiganj Sadar, Nandail of Mymensingh, Savar, Dhamrai, Tarabo of Narayanganj, Jamalpur's Sadar, Shorishabari and Madarganj, Tangails' Modhupur and Gopalpur and Rajbari.
One BNP relegate candidate won the polls in Melandaha.
Independent candidates won in Mirkadim of Munshiganj, Sonargaon, Faridpur Sadar, Tangail's Mirzapur and Rajbari's Goalondo municipalities.
