Airsoft Guns

Haha, we've had the same argument. If I was forced to use a knife, the only way to win would be to slowly get close, and then rush full speed inside the swing of the guy with the bat. Crowd him, then stick him. The problem is, you're going to get whacked badly at least once, and if it's your head or your knife arm, you're done.

Yeah in the end I chose the knife. The hope is you can fake out or absorb a blow from a bat and still be in good shape in the clinch.

why not improvise:

Spetsnaz ballistic knife guaranteed to f*ck **** up within 5-10 meters

for purely ''extra-curricular/recreational purposes'' i have an Airsoft AK-47 full/semi auto. 600 round extended mag; 800 rounds per min/ 475 feet per second (from the muzzle) / 200 feet effective range. Powered by 9v battery pack. Best for use with 6mm 0.32 gram high impact BB rounds .

it's been sitting around un-used lately. Definitely can do some damage, as demonstrated on my old (totally junked and beyond repair) previous laptop

This actually a long running argument with me and my friends. What weapon would you choose, a knife (standard k-bar), or full size wooden bat.

I would choose the knife as well.

Just the intention behind holding a knife, would give a significant psychological edge. A knife is a killing weapon, much more so than a bat.

Plus, it requires much less skill to be deadly with a knife compared to a bat.

in my humble opinion, it's easier to disable someone with a knife than with a bat. Bat has reach; knife does not.

if someone lunges at you with a knife, you step back.....depending on the angle of the lunge, if you are calm and focused just grab the attacker by the biceps with full grip. Otherwise, if you are in an area with chairs or other objects you can use it as a buffer of sorts. The idea is to use whatever means to get the attacker to be off balance. Once he's off balance, or his balance/movement has been disturbed you can twist his arm and kick him from BEHIND his knee. Always keep your eye on where his knife is especially with respect to where your body is. You can break his nose.

bats swinging has a lot of intertia to it. It has more reach. Even a off-the-mark miss will hurt and throw you off for a bit. Unless the guys a total moron and has no motor skills, it's likely he will mess you up unless you have something to counter it.

then, of course we can go into swords and all.....but I think Indiana Jones got that figured out pretty well....

You're right, both can be effective, depending on the circumstances. It's more of a personal choice I guess. :P

Easier to grab a bat versus a knife.

if it's swinging at you, no way to catch it without getting your hands and head busted while trying

someone with a knife must get reasonably close and take a lunge; the proximity provides enough working space to come up with a counter.

but obviously what one does in combat/defence training or classes --- and what happens when you are actually in a real-life moment --they can be a bit different. And in all honesty, a machete, butterfly or combat knife looks scarier than a wooden bat.

but i still am fairly confident i'd have an easier time 'disabling' a knife attacker over a bat wielding attacker

There are A LOT of people that are not even afraid of knifes, trust me..

Especially some people from the Ghettos. They'll rush you even if you have a knife. You'll probably get beat up more for having a knife too.

On that Indiana Jones scene - supposedly, Indy was supposed to have an elaborate whip vs. sword battle with the guy, but the takes were going badly. In disgust, he pulled the gun and shot at the actor with the sword. The director loved it, and they wrote it in.

Bat vs. Knife - The bat guy (BatMan?) needs to have some skills too. Take a wide grip on the bat with space between your hands, and use the bat in a thrusting manner. If you take a big, wild swing, you become open.

But a bat is not a sledge hammer... it's possible to recover from a swing very quickly, maintain some sort of guard. And all it takes is one modest rap to the knife hand, and you'll be breaking bones.
