Agni-III could be modified for use as anti-satellite weapon

Sun Oct 23 2011

An anti-satellite missile that can put in the leaage of countries like the US and China is feasible with Agni III intergrated with a satellite kill vehicle, according to DRDO Chief and Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister V K Saraswat.

Delivering a lecture on ‘DRDO, the Challenges Ahead’ at Air Marshal Y V Malse Memorial Lecture at the University of Pune, Saraswat said, “Developing such a missile is feasible if Agni III and BMD (ballistic Missile Defence) kill vehicle are integrated. The effective range, which is about 1400-1500 km, is sufficient to engage a satellite.”

Air Chief Marshal (Retd) P V Naik and Air Marshal (Retd) Bhushan Gokhale were also present on the occasion.

India has been reportedly developing an exo-atmospheric kill vehicle that can be integrated with the missile to engage satellites. Only the US, Russia and China have developed such anti-satellite weapon.

During the 90-minute lecture, Saraswat touched upon a number of issues pertaining to DRDO and defence production in general. After the failure of Kaveri engine for India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, which is fitted with GE 404/ 414 engines, Saraswat said there was the need to start yet another programme for development of a new engine for the ongoing Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). “While upgrade of Kaveri engine can continue, a new engine with variable cycle can be developed for AMCA,” he said, adding, “If we as nation are able to operationalise AMCA by 2030, we will be doing fairly good as far as IAF aircraft inventory is concerned.”

AMCA, being developed by HAL, is expected to fit between MMRCA and LCA. “Advanced integrated controls, reduced infrared signatures, advanced avionics, stealth materials such as radar absorbing paint, advanced composites and hypersonic materials are some areas that need further development. Further, production facilities at HAL also need to go hand in hand for which an upgrade is required at HAL,” he said.

He also spoke about a number of futuristic developments required in the era of cyber/ network centric warfare. “The idea of solar powered aircraft should have occurred to us. The development of such aircraft has certain challenges like development of avionic sensors, energy consumption-to-collection ratio, geographic areas of operation, weather and so on,” he said.

Pressing for a cyber command, Saraswat said a lot needs to be done on combating Nuclear Biological Chemical (NBC) warfare, Low Intensity Conflict (LIC), Information Security, composites and so on. “Time has come to introduce a programme for aerostats,” he said adding, “An investment of Rs 300 crore per year is needed if we have to be self-reliant.”

^ same amount of other Agni missiles it is believed ~16 Agni 2 and 1 missiles are produced each year by BDL they have the factories and infrastructure to do so and i believe India is developing other BDL integration and manufacturing facilities to accompany new missiles like Nirbhay, Agin v,Prahaar,Shaurya, Sagarika, K series of missiles Astra missiles future SAM's and future cruise missiles like LRCM and HSTDV etc

2030 for AMCA, I was expecting more like 2020.... Also we will soon see another aspect of Agni-3,its superb accuracy which is comparable if not better than the best in the world. The multiple tests arent for induction purposes only

^^^ AMCA can take its sweet time because we are upgrading Mirage 2000 fleet which can serve for another 20 good years when AMCA start coming in we can retire the Mirage 2000 and Jaguar fighter jets

I think V K Saraswat talks too much. Someone should tell him to stop talking and start working. We would like to see an Agni knock out a derelict satellite in outer space, we would rather see him doing it than hear him telling us that it can be done, we already know that it can be done.

the ABM's like PAD can be used to knock out LEO satellites but the future AD missiles and PDV missiles will be capable of engaging satellites located at higher altitudes Agni 3 has reached an apogee of 350km and can go higher as Agni 2 once reached an apogee of 400km if we place satellite kill vehicles with warheads on a Agni 3 missile that gives India the ability to knock out any satellite in space including spy satellites/ military satellites

I do not believe the design of AMCA would begin until India start operating t-50. So the first flight of this plane at 2030 is just about right. Hopefully, the AMCA designer would be flexible about the engine just in case an indigenous engine is not available, a design with a chosen foreign engine must be part of the plan.

actually first flight is believed to take place at the very least 2025 but delays and more time given could happen so at the very most first flight could take place by 2030 but AMCA will see operational use in the 2030s and beyond

how many agni_III could india produce per year?

Well it is difficult to explain the exact production rate
Well , as of December 2010 Indian Army had 4 Agni III in arsenal , while plan is to complete the production of 1 missile Regiment comprising 67 Missiles by 2015 ,so my guess is that we are looking at 12 missiles a yr

I do not believe that India have any proven kkv technology. All of the indian ABMs use directional warhead. Indian can use the directional warhead against a satellite.

not just directional warheads we have tested gimbaled directional warheads on our PAD and will test them as well on our AAD missiles if we had gimbaled warheads then we use smaller warheads that can take out satellites easily

And i think you do not believe many things .. which in any way wont make any difference to India goals.. isnt it funny? :pop:

Has anyone ever told you that you talk too much BS??The AAD works on the principle of Kinetic kill/hit to kill and you are saying India doesn't have kinetic kill vehicle tech!!At least do some research before you start to pour your BS here.

BDL facility could produce 18 Agni 2/year.Same should be applied to Agni 3 aswell.
