Agartala, June 10 (bdnews24.com)—An eight-member delegation of Indian Railways Board have finalised the proposed railway link between Agartala with Akhaura via Gangasagar in Bangladesh.

"The new alignment which will be very helpful to both countries has been finalised on the basis of joint spot survey by the members of Indian and Bangladesh railways," said B N Rajsekhar, additional member, Planning, Railways Board during a press conference in the capial of Tripura state.

"Things became more active after the visit of honourable prime minister of Bangladesh to this country (India)."

The detailed project report (DPR) has already been prepared for the project and the work is expected to be completed within 2.5 years time if everything goes well.

"The Indian railway ministry has approved Rs 267 crore for laying 15 km of railway track to connect Agartala with Akhaura via Gangasagar in Bangladesh," Rajsekhar said.

The Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON) will execute the project of which five km falls in the Indian side while 10 km will be constructed in Bangladesh.

The entire cost of the project including the part in Bangladesh, a grant, will be borne by the Indian government.

Initially, the line will be a meter gauge with all facilities for converting it into broad -gauge when necessary.

India will also construct an additional rail line from Gangasagar to Akhaura parallel to existing line for smooth movement of traffic to run more trains on this route.

India is also establishing another rail link from Agartala to Subroon, the southern border town of Tripura from where the Chittagong sea port is just 72 km away.

When the Chittagong port opens up, Tripura is expected to be the gateway for India to Southeast Asia.

why do we need a railway track for 15 kms?....a road would just do....i think a railway to cover 15 kms is stupid

That 15 km will connect you to the Chittagong port theough rail track. Its for container transportation.

Iajdani, look, this is a rail track that will be used to transport goods to Agartala from Calcutta. First leg of transport is by sea/river and is from Calcutta to Akhaura river port. The railway will then transport the same goods to Agartala. This is why this 15 km rail track is being built.

This has nothing to do with Chittagong port. But, as the report says, the GoI is also constructing another rail line to Sobroon in south Tripura. This will connect Tripura with Chittagong.

As far as I know, the Akhaura-Agartala route is meant for transporting the machineries for Patiala Power Plant in Tripura. I do not think, the GoB has given a permanent transit to India.

Yes, you are right about transporting heavy machineries via roads. Then, it seems that we are building train lines to facilitate transit of non-palatana goods. But, when the transit deal was signed?

I have my personal endorsement for a sea/river/road and sea/river/rail modes of transit instead of direct road transit through Bangladesh. Sea/river transsits are already in existence since the time of Ziaur Rahman. So, Calcutte-Akhaura-Agartala route is little different with road and rail components in it.

River connections do not publicize Indian transit the way a direct road transit would do. A time will come when people will get used to it, and the govt will be able to further open the country for transit. But, like Akhaura-Agartala,. India will have to bear the expenses to build the infrastructures. Will it be $7 billion or more?

Not going to happen. Unless the infrastructure will be exclusively used for Indian transit, as in the case of this rail link. Most India will do is provide loan for any such infrastructure and or help Bangladesh get loans from ADB, WB or countries like Japan. Besides that 7 Billion figure isn't substantiated. Either case this has been argued over before, best be left for the authorities and the governments to work out the details.

Akhaura-Agartala rly is built by Indian money. But it will also be used by bangladesh. Next time, you prepare yourself to pour $7 billion or more into BD, and together we will be using the facilities. Not bad for BD. But, it also helps India to get its NE connected. What a marvellous approach by BD! Mr. India, no free lunch, please!
