Smog has started creeping in Karachi after Lahore.
The city woke up to a thin layer of haze engulfing it Wednesday morning. At first, the people thought it was fog but the Met department clarified that it is smog.
Met Director Abdul Rasheed confirmed it. The visibility is limited to 500 metres and is expected to get better as sun goes up, he said.
The temperature in the morning was recorded between 19°C to 22 °C, while humidity in the air was recorded at 33 to 35%. The mercury is expected to drop in the next 48 hours.
“People should avoid going out unnecessarily,” said Dr Zulfiqar, who works at Civil Hospital. “They should wear a mask to protect their skin, eyes, nose, throat and respiratory system.”
Smog blanketed different parts of the city, including II Chundrigar Road, Shahrae Faisal and University Road.
Difference between fog and smog
Fog is formed when the water vapour in the air condenses and the resulting droplets just stay in the air and reduce visibility.
The main difference between fog and smog is the smoke. Inhaling smog is more dangerous as it fills the lungs with cancer-causing carcinogens. It may also lead to severe breathing problems.
