Smog has started creeping in Karachi after Lahore.

The city woke up to a thin layer of haze engulfing it Wednesday morning. At first, the people thought it was fog but the Met department clarified that it is smog.

Met Director Abdul Rasheed confirmed it. The visibility is limited to 500 metres and is expected to get better as sun goes up, he said.

The temperature in the morning was recorded between 19°C to 22 °C, while humidity in the air was recorded at 33 to 35%. The mercury is expected to drop in the next 48 hours.

“People should avoid going out unnecessarily,” said Dr Zulfiqar, who works at Civil Hospital. “They should wear a mask to protect their skin, eyes, nose, throat and respiratory system.”

Smog blanketed different parts of the city, including II Chundrigar Road, Shahrae Faisal and University Road.

Difference between fog and smog

Fog is formed when the water vapour in the air condenses and the resulting droplets just stay in the air and reduce visibility.

The main difference between fog and smog is the smoke. Inhaling smog is more dangerous as it fills the lungs with cancer-causing carcinogens. It may also lead to severe breathing problems.

Smog in Karachi

KARACHI:
If we, the Karachiites, thought that smog was an issue concerning Punjab, especially Lahore, then we have been proven wrong. This year just at the onset of winter in November, Karachi is experiencing smog — a name given to fog covered with smoke that usually stems from burning of residue of crops in villages.

Considering the fact that there is not much agricultural activity in and around the city, the smog surely is the result of many industries set up in the city without proper environmental safety measures. The ever-increasing number of small vehicles is also one of the causes of smog. A city where there is no check on plying smoke-emitting vehicles only smog can be expected.

Will the provincial government take action to ensure that smog does not become a frequent occurrence, or will it continue with its masterly inaction as it is doing over other pressing issues?

No, it is just ignorance and greed coming to bite a nation.
Pakistan’s national character is just coming home to roost.

:hitwall::hitwall:

ITS CALLED POLLUTION. WE DO NOT LIVE IN THE YEAR 760AD. THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED SCIENCE. STUDY IT TO FIND YOUR ANSWER.

Friends,

I understand what SMOG is. Most likely a side effect of modern human lifestyle: https://www.conserve-energy-future.com/smogpollution.php

This phenomenon is prominent in China and India:

https://www.chinadialogue.net/artic...4-How-did-China-s-air-pollution-get-this-bad-

https://www.livemint.com/Politics/i...real-reason-behind-the-north-Indian-smog.html

Now it is affecting parts of Pakistan. This phenomenon was unheard of in Lahore 4 years ago, but it is manifesting on yearly basis here. And now it is manifesting in Karachi (surprising because sea is there).

This is something big.

Do you guys know that Holy Quran contain a Surah about the spread of harmful smoke? Surah Ad-Dukhan to be precise. There is a hadith about this phenomenon as well.
