A sharp jump in the number of foreign post-doctoral students in Israel - mainly from India and China
According to CBS data, there was a 44% increase in the number of postdoctoral students in Israel within 5 years; the main reason is a 86% jump in the number of foreigners, with a third of them coming from India. The list of institutions is led by the Hebrew University with 23% of researchers

There was a 44% increase in the number of postdoctoral fellows in Israel between 2014 and 2019 - from 2,120 to 3,050; The source of the increase is mainly an 86% jump in the number of foreign postdoctoral fellows during this period, from 880 to 1,630; The rate of foreign postdoctoral fellows jumped from 42% in 2014 to 54% in 2019 - with 34% of them coming from India. This is according to data on those with a doctoral degree who are pursuing a post-doctoral degree in Israel, which is published today (Monday) by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The number of postdoctoral students is an indicator of the status and prestige of academic institutions as research institutions.

A postdoctoral fellowship is an independent research period conducted by those with a doctoral degree, usually at an institution other than the one in which they did their doctorate. The postdoctoral fellowship is a stage in the training of lecturers and is considered in many institutions a condition for obtaining a professorship. In Israel, the expectation is that the postdoctoral fellowship will be conducted at a senior foreign university, and this greatly harms the integration of women in senior positions in academia, because they have more difficulty moving their families. According to the CBS, 77% of Israeli male post-doctoral students do their post-doctoral work abroad, compared to only 48% of women.

The Israeli academy is considered very weak in the field of internationalism, that is, in the combination of foreign lecturers and students at Israeli universities. This also adversely affects the position of Israeli institutions in international rankings. Therefore, the increase in the number of foreign doctoral students can be seen as a certain success of the Planning and Budgeting Committee of the Council for Higher Education, which works to improve the internationalism of campuses in Israel. Of course in 2020 a drop is expected, due to the corona plague.

Thus, 34% of foreign post-doctoral students in Israel came from India and 11% from China. This is compared to only 3% from the United States and 5% from Germany. One possible reason why Israel is more popular with postdoctoral fellows in the East than in the West is that they suffer from a language problem on every campus in the West, and security issues may also be less of a deterrent to them.

More than 40% of the postdoctoral fellows in Israel (Israelis and foreigners) worked at two universities, 23% of them at the Hebrew University and 20% of them at the Weizmann Institute. This is compared to 14% at the Technion and 12% at Tel Aviv University. 74% of postdoctoral fellows in Israel in 2019 were in science

Indians might attempt to stay on in Israel ? I know Chinese consider Israel as high tech so they want to learn and go back to China with new knowledge.
