A real counterweight to US power is a global necessity

It takes the combined and calculated efforts of the likes such as China and Russia...

Please...I read commentaries of similar sentiments in America and in Europe back in 1998.

Russia and the former Soviet satellites would be busy recovering from the economic pain of the collapse of the Soviet Union, that would leave China as the standard bearer for Marxism and Russia the junior partner. Together they would be that 'counterweight' to the US, especially when NATO would be dissolved for lack of purpose, China would learn from the mistakes of the Soviets on how to implement Marxism, and together they would create a better version of what the Kremlin tried.

I practically devoured every commentary from every columnists from Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, Life, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and so many other newspapers I cannot remember. I wanted to know what I believed to be smarter and wiser minds than myself would guide the US thru what I believed to be the next 'counterweight' to the US led by China.

Yeah...All of that came true...

The US has been weakening ever since 2000. Since the 2008 crash, the US has severely weakened. This is why the US regime has gone hyper aggressive as it sees its power weakening. The US economic Ponzi scheme is hanging on by 0% interest rates and massive money printing and market manipulation.

As the years go by, the US power will weaken further and it will eventually have its Soviet empire 'moment'.

The US is rotting internally which is covered up by the propaganda mouthpiece of the repulsive regime in Washington.

Most Americans despise the fascist tyrants in Washington.

Ofcourse the CIA trolls will defend their Washington bosses like they are paid to do.

True but that couterweight should come from a responsible country/organisation ,not despotical regimes like Russia or China.

What the world needs is a more powerfull,united(politically and militarily) European Union.

Geopolitics is all about power.

Nobody can protect your sovereignty for you, as so many countries have seen (and personally experienced) over the past decade.

In this world, you can only rely on your own power and your own capabilities. Otherwise your security will be left to the "good will" of others, and depending on the good will of others is a failed policy.

You can hope for the good will of others, but you can't depend on it. Just look at any conflict over the past decade to see examples of this.

The weak are the ones who suffer, that is a truism throughout all of human history. The only way to change that, would be to change human nature itself.

Until then, our lesson from our past two hundred years of suffering is: "Don't be weak".

The US, UK, Soviet and Russia have been India's behind-door masters since its birth.

Even when print columnists and TV talkingheads opined that the EU should be that 'counterweight', it would not be a true 'counterweight' anyway, because the word implies some measure of ideological differences, not merely economic and military ones.

Must be another slow news day at The Guardian to post this argument again. I remember reading the same tripe when the Soviet Union collapsed -- ignobly and spectacularly. Leftists everywhere, from the Americas to Europe to Asia, called for the same thing -- a 'counterweight' to the US. The EU came and went with no real 'counterweight'. Once it was Japan with her economic might -- meh. No one seriously considered the ME as a contender to the title of 'counterweight', not even as a bad joke among drunks, and we all know drunks laughs at just about everything.

And now Russia...???
