VILLUPURAM: A 45-year-old man threw his two sons and a daughter into a well after his first and second wives strongly objected to his decision to marry for the third time in Villupuram district of Tamil on Wednesday.

D Velu, 45, a lorry driver in a village near Ulundurpet, went to his second wife, V Karupayee, in Pookanalavadi village after a quarrel with his first wife, V Chitra, two days ago. He took his daughter, V Priya, 8, and son, V Veeramuthu, 6, born from his first marriage, with him.

Police said Velu had decided to marry another woman. Chitra, whom he married 10 years ago, registered her strong objection to it, leading to the quarrel.

Karupayee, whom he married five years ago, too objected to the driver's decision to marry again. Velu had two sons — Veeramani, 4, and Vishnu, 10 months old - from his second marriage, police said.

The driver picked up a quarrel with her on Wednesday night. Enraged over his wives' strong objection, the driver took Priya, Veeramuthu and Veeramani from the house on Wednesday night when Karupayee was sleeping. He gave them chocolates, took them separately to near the well and threw each of them into it. He fled the scene after committing the crime.

Priya and Veeramani drowned while Veeramuthu escaped by clinging on to a pipe. On hearing the boy's cry, a passerby alerted the villagers, who rescued him.

The villagers alerted police and a team of fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot. They fished out the bodies of Veeramani and Priya.

Police registered a case against Velu and launched a hunt for him.

weather it was legal or not… the person in the story is a hindu or a non-muslim…
it was a simple reply to @Star Wars troll post…
Yeah. I can not understand that part myself.
A non-Muslim can not get a second marriage registered in India, but the names are all Hindu.

Leads me to think that he bribed a mullah for a conversion certificate. Thats what people here do when they wish to have a second marriage without divorcing the first wife(as that entails heavy alimony), they get a conversion certificate and get the marriage officially registered as Muslims.

No it should be illegal for everyone including Muslims.
In this day and age there has to be equality for men and women. If men are given the right to have multiple wives then women must be given the right to have multiple husbands or neither should have this.

There is no place for polygamy or polyandry in modern society. We are striving for uniform civil code. Hopefully it will be implemented soon.

Its a particular tribe which has this custom where 2 brothers share a wife. Its not allowed by law. They dont declare it and register the marriage with both. Marriage is registered with only one. The custom is dying in that tribe now though.

it a democratic state the state should not have the right to implement "moral" laws. citizens should be completely free long as they are not security threat or infringing on others rights……in a modern society we have multiple sexual partners… so why do we have laws against multiple spouses??
give me one good reason for a law against polygamy or polyandry??
note: this is for a liberal secular country like india or european countries ect… laws against polyandry are there for religious reasons in islamic states.
