84 jawans jailed for Pilkhana mutiny

Eighty-four jawans of Dhaka sector headquarters of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Wednesday were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from four months to seven years for their involvement in the 2009 mutiny at Pilkhana.

The Special Court-11, led by Mymensingh Sector Commander Iftekhar Uddin Mahmud, also fined each of the convicts Tk 100.

Of the convicts, 23 were jailed for highest seven years, two for six years, one for five years, five for four years, 19 for three years, five for three and a half years, 13 for two years, nine for two and a half years, one for two and nine months, three for one year, one for one year and six months, one for nine months and one for four months.

The court, which sat at Pilkhana BGB headquarters, started pronouncing the verdict at about 9:20am and continued for an hour.

The rebels were accused of leaving Darbar Hall defying the order of the then BDR director general, taking part actively in the mutiny, and for not informing the higher authorities about the carnage and dumping dead bodies.

A total of 74 people, including the then BDR DG and 56 other army officers, were brutally killed in a bloody mutiny at Pilkhana which spread from the headquarters to some other units across the country in February 25-26, 2009.
