ISLAMABAD: Around 69 percent work on 969 MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project (NJHP) has been completed and all out efforts are being made to complete it during the scheduled year 2016.
Official sources told APP here Friday that first unit of the project would start generating in 2016 subject to timely release of required funds to the project.

They said overall physical progress is 68.50 percent adding overall financial progress of the project is 60.50 percent.

The source said an amount of Rs.166.300 billion has been spent on the project so far.

"The total cost of the Project as per second Revised PC-1 is Rs.274.88 billion under the head of Neelum-Jhelum," they said.

They said that 3rd diversion stage at dam site will also be completed by April while the C-1 site of power house had also 100 percent completed.

They said that work on the project is being carried out in full swing and upon completion, Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project will contribute 5.15 billion units of cheap electricity to the national grid.

The annual benefits accruing from the project have been estimated at Rs.45 billion.

Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project (NJHEP) is located in the vicinity Muzaffarabad. It envisages the diversion of Neelum River water through a tunnel out-falling into Jhelum River. The intake Neelum-Jhelum is at Nauseri 41km east of Muzaffarabad and has installed capacity of 969 MW.

I think few months ago the progress was 67.50% --- so it took many months to complete 1% I guess

I also see the news in similar threads section back from February 2014 saying 63% work was completed by then. So by this logic we might have this project completed in 4-6 years...

Come on government, don't be so cruel release the funds and push the workers to complete ASAP

I agree, expect it to be completed in 2017 or atleast in the PMLN tenure for political scoring

Not long ago the talks were to push this project to be completed before 2015 as it was originally planned for completion in 2015. Like every project in Pakistan, we see the completion after years of delay and when the original cost has shot up by 200%

Yes i remember, the original deadline was 2015 but around 2010-12,the funds were stopped and even the chinese firms had backed off from the project in 2010-12.

I would give this govt the credit for securing the funds for the dam and i would be happy if it is indeed completed by 2016 end

Its a big lie. Government could not arrange funding and falls short of 75 billion rs.

Same is the story of Gadani coal project. Chinese pulled back due to bad handling of Government negotiators. Meddling by Baloch terrorist government and the project is dead in the water.

If gov't provides electricity in 2015 or 2016, people will forget the good it has done in 2018. Solution? Push all projects to 2017 and early 2018. Election pitch "Look, islamabad airport is completed, gawadar airport is completed, load shedding is almost non existent and in the next 2 years there will be 0 load shedding." (some projects can't be completed until at least 2020, like those nuclear plants).

This is the way politics works in Pakistan unfortunately, and some other countries. USA on the other hand has congress election every 2 years, so the President has to work hard and deliver within 2 years, not wait until 5th year.

A formula in Pakistan can work where let's say KP elections are held year after, then baloch, then sindh and finally Punjab. But since provincial and national elections are held together during the 5th year, all gov'ts will start providing in the 5th year (same goes for PTI, they neglected KP for 2 years).

Finally, have local body elections in the 3rd year term for respective provinces.

Not just Pakistan, many countries do this. This is politics. If you want to win next election, you do this.

Don't you read news where Nawaz says load shedding to end in 2018, gawadar route to complete in 2018. All projects are slated till 2018. Iran Pakistan has pipeline. LNG etc. They can be completed before, but there is corruption to be done.

When 2018 election comes, no one will care for oil price drop in 2014. But if Nawaz does it in 2018, people will vote for him.

We have the formula you proposed implemented in India . Different states go for election in different years ( was designed so to make the work of election commission of India easier) .But the situation was equally bad if not worse than Pakistan in this regard since independence and only the last few years have seen timely completion of projects. So maybe there are other underlying causes that we are overlooking.
