Agriculture Department is giving 60 percent subsidy on the provision of drip irrigation system

MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Jan, 2019 ) :Agriculture Department is giving 60 percent subsidy on the provision of drip irrigation system.

According to a statement issued here by Agriculture Information department, drip irrigation is of vital importance due to shortage of water. It helps save about 75 percent irrigation water and irrigates plant roots simultaneously.

It is also economical and reduces expenditures on fertilizers.

The drip irrigation system saves time, labour and improves produce. It does not allow weeds to flourish because weeds wither out on not getting enough water.

The department has urged farmers to focus on drip irrigation system and in case of any query related to this process they could contact agriculture department.

Implementation Of Drip and Sprinkler Could Possibly Save More Water Than Dams At A fractions Of The Cost
Yes and no...Dams are still necessary coz we need some water storage for dry spells....We also need dams for hydroelectric power...
So although drip systems will save water, we still need dams!

Another thing that can save water is the people who waste it like anything! I still dont understand why freshwater is used to water acres of field, fresh water is used to wash cars....In Pakistan there seems to be lack of understanding of recycled water/ reverse osmosis/ treated water - which in the West people use for everything else and drink either fresh and filtered water only OR treated water (which is expensive like desalinated water)...But I dont really know of many countries that WASTE fresh water like Pakistanis!

Water management wing of agriculture department is totally shit. Whole department including agriculture needs a revamp.

I remember few yrs ago under PPP, experts from Netherlands were flown in to help with our water crisis...They came, said our water tables are almost dry we got this much years of water left...It was all in the news...AND THEN...NOTHING! Literally nothing was done...This was a good half a decade ago!

FINALLY

OF NOTE PAKISTAN HAS AVERAGE FLOW OF 140 MAF of water vs NILE 50 MAF(shared by 5 countries) and California basin 30-40MAF yet it productivity is 10X less than california because we are stuck in 1800s

first we need to line major canals
second we need to force private people to use drip for orchids
than we can come to sprinkles for general crops

The Majority Of Water Is Actually Wasted In Irrigation

But Yes You're Right We Do Need Dams For Hydropower. But What I Said Was That Efficient Irrigation Technologies Can Help Conserve More Water Than Dams AT A Fraction Of The Cost(Plus Less Time To Commission).I Did Not Say That We Don't Need Dams

I know you didnt say that...All I added is despite whatever we do, we will still need dams...

Drip Irrigation has been very succesful for my cousin back in Pakistan for his orange baghs in sargodha.

he believes this should be standard pratice for big growers to use the technology.

and actually its very simple concept use science and education to determine how much water is needed daily for your plant to yield the best crop.

This is really good but this technique is outdated now. Pakistan should adopt Zero budget farming now. No cost of seed, no cost of fertilizer, no insecticide, water consumption 50% to 20% than regular farming. Pakistan should focus of developng itself as organic food hub in years to come. This will bring a lots of prosperity in Pakistan.

I am studying water management and believe it or not it's the only proper degree program with water management as specialization in whole punjab. Or else civil engineers or agricultural engineers are drafted into this field. There is no option of mphil and we have to look towards kpk.

Seems very simple here but i have also heard that MNCs will now shift focus to organic agriculture after making billions selling pesticides.

And seriously no one even knows that there is a water management wing in punjab at tehsil and district level. Department needs reforms. Grants from world bank USaid are wasted and little practical work is done. I am currently doing internship at govt ofwm office. We students need guidance and scholarships for further studies. Countries like Netherlands are way ahead of us. And we barely have figured what degrees our students should take. PARc was doing bit of research as well. USaid is funding a whole dept in jamshoro. Which is again focused at engineering.

It's very simple in application and government is giving subsidies as well to farmers whom opt for high efficiency irrigation system.

Without dams we won't have any water to sprinkle. We need to store first.

Water management is none existent!

I wish i could goto Netherlands IHE Delft institute for my mphil. But no financial backing really hurts. Scholarships for Pakistanis are lesser.

Cant afford it considering we also have really rich agriculturist!

Pakistan should focus of developng itself as organic food hub in years to come.
There is a thread running for that I think! :agree:

I believe it! It seems that natural resources in Pakistan are mismanaged and then there is a stupid thought that they are never ending "barqat" ....Sure its a blessing but blessings are also taken away if you dont manage and appreciate them or misuse them!

Seems very simple here but i have also heard that MNCs will now shift focus to organic agriculture after making billions selling pesticides.
This is the craziness! We were perfectly fine using NATURAL fertilizers...Organic doesnt mean no fertilizer just means no chemical based fertilizers/ pesticides! In the West they use different techniques to counter pesticides such as:
a) Grow different crops or crops that deter pests on the outer boundary or mix the crops.
b) Have genetically modified crops through breeding or biotechnology or GMO with higher resistances to pests or those which can out compete pests for resources: like with longer roots , wider root hair spread, having longer branches, larger leaves to trap more sunlight and so on!
c) Using pesticides
d) Having minimized input to reduce weeds and pests

And seriously no one even knows that there is a water management wing in punjab at tehsil and district level. Department needs reforms. Grants from world bank USaid are wasted and little practical work is done.
If there is one it is dead and just eating all the "loans" it takes!

Countries like Netherlands are way ahead of us
Yes they are world leaders when it comes to water management! I like their ideas of canal system and also how they keep coming up with new innovations all because of 1 major flood and they said ENOUGH! People made sacrifice and gave up their homes to allow for flood control and management and took the money and got smaller homes! Pakistan has expierenced so many floods but Maharaja ki olad dont give sacrifices nor understand how to manage anything!

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/feb/16/flooding-netherlands

https://www.earthmagazine.org/article/dutch-masters-netherlands-exports-flood-control-expertise

Even our own govt had "employed experts from Netherlands" but despite all the money wasted for the consultancy, our govt at that time did zilch!

I wish i could goto Netherlands IHE Delft institute for my mphil. But no financial backing really hurts. Scholarships for Pakistanis are lesser.
Do you really wish for that?
