Malls are now more of a place to hang out and chill, not exactly a shopping place.

They were like that for people, especially US teenagers in the 80s and 90s, looking to shop for an aesthetic to define their identity.

I suspect Chinese malls survive because of dense apartment buildings near these malls.

No, because in Australia, a brothel is a brothel, it's legal to run a brothel in most Australian state and prostitution is legal in all state, if you can legally run a sex work location, you don't hide it in a mall. If I want to have sex and i have money to pay for it, I can get it anywhere in Australia as long as it is not in public, or near a public places like school and church, some state allowed brothel some state don't but all state allow prostitution, so literally no sex worker will operate thru massage parlor here, they either work as an escort (individually) in all state or as brothels (collectively) if brothel is allowed in that state.
