DHAKA: Nearly 4.6 million (46 lakh) people in the country use illegal drugs as Bangladesh is most vulnerable for drug abuse and its illicit trafficking due to its geographic and strategic location, according to Department of Narcotics Control (DNC).
DNC sources said illegal drugs are smuggled into the country through some 49 points along the borders with the two neighboring countries. Generally, less educated, unemployed, low income group and homeless people as well as those with adverse family environment are more vulnerable to using illegal drugs.
A top DNC official said they have no accurate figure of drug users due to the absence of a countrywide survey.
However, it is assumed that there are some 4.6 million (46 lakh) drug users in the country. Majority of drug users are youths, he added.
The official said Bangladesh is a transit country for illegal drugs produced in the 'Golden Triangle' and to a much lesser degree, the 'Golden Crescent'.
Country's porous border with India and Myanmar augments the drug smuggling with these countries. Currently, main drugs of abuse are Cannabis, Heroin, Phensedyl, Buprenorphine and Yaba. Buprenorphine is the most common injecting drug.
Department of Narcotics Control has so far identified 49 points in the border areas through which contraband drugs are smuggled into the country.
These points are in Kalaroa, Debhata, Bhomra and Kulia (Satkhira); Chowgacha, Benapole, Sharsha and Jhikargacha (Jessore); Damurhuda and Jibonnagar (Chuadanga); Mujibnagar (Meherpur); Bagha, Charghat, Belpukuria and Godagari (Rajshahi), Shibganj and Gomastapur (Chapainawabganj); Akkelpur and Panchbibi (Joypurhat); Phulbari, Birampur, Hilli, Hakimpur, Birol and Porsha (Dinajpur); Roumari and Nageshwari (Kurigram); Jhenaigati and Nalitabari (Sherpur); Haluaghat and Dhobaura (Mymensingh); Durgapur (Netrakona); Jakiganj, Chunarughat and Madhabpur (Sylhet); Kasba, Akhaura and Bijoynagar (Bramhanbaria); Chouddagram, Burichang, Bramhanpara and Bibirbazar (Comilla); Chhagolnaiya, Fulgazi and Parshuram (Feni); and Teknaf and Ukhia (Cox's Bazar).
