Islamabad, March 11 (IANS) Twentysix Indian fishermen have been detained for fishing in Pakistani waters, authorities said.

Pakistan's Maritime Security Agency (MSA) Wednesday night detained six Indian fishing boats and their 26 crew members who were inside Pakistani waters, the Daily Times reported Friday.

Indian fishermen enter Pakistan's marine-life rich Indus delta region to capture high quality fish, the media report said.

Seven fishermen held, boat seized by India

KARACHI, March 7: Indian coastal authorities seized a Pakistani boat (B-15769) and arrested seven crew members in the open sea late on Sunday night.

The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum confirmed the names of six of the seven arrested men — Abu Salam, Mohammed Yousuf, Mohammed Ismail, Mohammed Naim, Abdul Latif and Shabaz — all belonging to Arkanabad, Bin Qasim Town.

The boat had left the local jetty a week ago, said a PFF spokesman.

After the arrest of the seven fishermen, the number of Pakistani fishermen in Indian jails has reached 135 while 299 Indian fishermen are in jails here.

The PFF condemned the incident, saying that despite repeated assurances by the Pakistan and Indian governments to help resolve the issue, no positive step had been taken.

The spokesman said the PFF had written several letters to higher authorities in Pakistan and approached civil society organisations of both Pakistan and India, urging them to refrain from arresting poor fishermen, the authorities on both sides had paid no heed to the issue.

This has created further uncertainty among the fishermen who depend on fishing, and now many of them are reluctant to go to sea for fear of arrest.

He said fishermen of both sides were being arrested over the invisibly demarcated border in the open sea. He said the irony was that mostly these fishermen were caught at night, when they go to sleep after fishing.

The PFF urged the government to ensure the safe release of the fishermen and remove uncertainty among community people.—Our Staff Reporter

this is a common problem with all countries India borders because lack of GPS and agreements. We get others fisherman and they get India's , although, in all honesty- can you blame India being extra cautious about Pakistani ones, given the 26/11. would you not do the same if the roles were reversed?

if we would have wanted the revenge we could take on that particular year but its not needed
