26/11: Tahawwur Rana's verdict weakens India's case against ISI

this is what i read: "Only Headley had said that Major Iqbal was from the ISI. Later, Headley told the court that the ISI establishment was not aware of the 26/11 plot. Later, he even said he had no evidence that Major Iqbal was an ISI officer," the source said.

but lets wait for things to get clearer... its a bit pre mature

please provide the source for bold part

Headley has clearly implicated ISI, there is little doubt left now, except for diehard apologists.

He has done nothing of the sort - he claims that the individuals he dealt with were ISI, but he also states that he does not know their real identity, if he is not sure of their real identity, then he cannot really establish whether or not they were actually ISI.

Both Headley and US investigators have yet to establish that the individuals Headley dealt with were serving ISI or Military officials.

There is indeed a lot to 'gloat about' given Headley's testimony that he is not aware of the real identities of "Major Iqbal' and Company.

Tahawwur Rana's conviction sets the clock ticking on ISI

NEW DELHI: The conviction of Tahawwur Rana by a federal jury in Chicago for providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is a blow to Pakistan's support to the terror group. This could have implications for the outcome of another 26/11 case in New York where the ISI has been directly charged.

The other case pertains to a lawsuit filed in New York by family members of some of the 26/11 victims saying that ISI be declared a terror organization. Indian officials have said they might consider becoming a party to the lawsuit to help the petitioners achieve this. With these cases, LeT is getting squeezed internationally. By being one of ISI's prized assets, the spy agency too is getting squeezed.

Official sources here believe this might help India's case that Pakistan should expedite the trial of the seven 26/11 accused currently in Pakistani custody. But Pakistan government is not yet ready to give up on its LeT connections. Rana still faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and will remain in federal custody without bond.

Rana's conviction on grounds of collusion with LeT, sources here feel, is more significant than his acquittal on the charge of aiding 26/11 attacks. It's a precedent that can be used against other "supporters" of LeT, even if their fingerprints are not actually in an attack. Certainly, this precedent would help in the conviction of those who helped Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square bomber. "It's a blow to LeT," said a source.

Rana's acquittal of conspiracy to provide material support to the 26/11 attacks was expected because there was little evidence. But the fact remains that he provided cover to David Headley knowing full well that his mission was to work for the LeT/ISI combine to plan terror attacks in India. That's the basis for his conviction.

According to Rana's own testimony during the trial, he had even spoken to Major Iqbal of the ISI who appears to have been a key planner of the attacks. Rana's conviction also involved participating in a conspiracy involving a terrorism plot against a Danish newspaper.

"Today's verdict demonstrates our commitment to hold accountable not only terrorist operatives, but also those who facilitate their activities. As established at trial, Tahawwur Rana provided valuable cover and support to David Headley, knowing that Headley and others were plotting terror attacks overseas," said Todd Hinnen, acting assistant attorney general for national security.

"The effort to combat terrorism and bring justice to the victims is a global effort, requiring the cooperation and collaboration of many countries and many people," said Robert D Grant, special agent-in-charge of the Chicago office of FBI. The Indian government recently authorised its consulate in Chicago to depute an official to testify in the case, which is unusual in itself, because India famously tries to stay clear of cases in foreign countries. But India's acquiescence is proof of how important the government considers this case.

According to a US statement, Rana is the second defendant to be convicted among a total of eight co-defendants who have been indicted in this case since late 2009. David Coleman Headley, 50, pleaded guilty in March 2010 to all 12 counts against him, including aiding and abetting the murders of the six US victims.

I am glad a terrorist is caught and served punishment even if he did not get convicted on 26/11 charges but his conviction on Danish newspaper charges proves he was not an innocent soul. His remaining connections with whomsoever in question will come out sooner or later

^^^ Until the identities of those alleged to be 'ISI agents' is actually established as serving 'ISI and/or military', and a case for 'institutional ISI/PA involvement is made' (which Headley himself claims is not true), the ISI cannot be shown complicit in anything, Indian and Western wishful thinking and propaganda aside.

^^ But, but, some western western countries + bharat are pointing fingers at us. So many countries are pointing fingers at us, hence it must be true. Why would they lie to us? Not believing in these stories is a conspiracy theory. (typical bharati logic).

What these guys don't realize is that THEY are the ones making conspiracy theories. That's what happens when you throw words around like children throw toys without knowing what the word means. Pretty much anyone not believing in what they say must be a conspiracy theorist. But if you dig a little deeper, THEY are the ones making conspiracy theories.

Even yesterday America provide proof of PAK Military establishment with terrorists

David Headley was an under-cover agent of CIA... he traveled to Pakistan multiple times to conduct undercover surveillance operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

How credible that a CIA agent turns into LET conspirer & under ISI's plan he carried so-called terror attack inside india...

No, they provided a video showing militants leaving two compounds before raids - depending on how the raids were organized, how many people were involved, and whether local paramilitaries and FC were involved, there are several ways the militants could have been tipped off. It does not mean the institutions themselves are involved.

no one has anything to loose or gain except the hawks in india. they now have less material which they could possibly use to drag ISI in the mumbai attacks.

and also many here were literally waiting for the US court to link Rana to mumbai attacks so they could change their gears while bashing ISI.

Hawks in India do not need American certificates to scold ISI at any forum. We have our own inputs and many times coming from very Pakistani analysts and ex COAS. Its a well documented fact how agencies in Pakistan are operating Jihadi factions since Russian invasion of Afghanistan.

Pakistan has been changing gear first by totally disowning Headley and Rana before the trail and now finding technical relieves out of a open conviction. Headley himself has attested that few people from ISI were involved and both Rana and headley assisted each other on many occasions.

Guys these things are difficult to prove, due to obvious reasons. No one working with intelligence agency will meet people with real names, that is basic. Same thing about raid. The point being how many such instances you find in real life that makes you suspect one way or other.
The list of incidence I saw makes me believe ISI supports terrorist. kasab was biggest example, if there is nothing to hide why try denying to core.
