25 hurt as Jamaat, police clash in city

Some 25 people, including five policemen, were injured in a clash between Jamaat-e-Islami activists and the police in the citys Mouchak area on Monday.
The police also detained eight Jamaat activists from the spot on charge of attack on them.
Jamaat sources said the party activists were trying to gather at Engineers Institute, Bangladesh after 3:00pm as part of its three-day central programme protesting at the trial of Delwar Hossain Sayedee on war crime charges.
They said the police prevented the party leaders and activists from gathering in the Engineers Institute.
At one stage, the Jamaat activists brought a procession from Kakrail crossing and proceeded towards Malibagh crossing at about 4:00pm.
They also held a rally at Malibagh crossing. Jamaat central leaders Taslim Alam and Mojibur Rahman addressed the rally.
As police swung into action to disperse the rally, the Jamaat men attacked the law enforcers, triggering a clash. They also hurled brick bats at the police.
During the chase and counter chase, 20 Jamaat activists and five policemen were injured, witnesses said.
Talking to reporters, additional deputy commissioner of police (Ramna division) Sayed Nurul Islam said Jamaat was trying to gather at the Engineers Institute without prior permission from the authorities.
We tried to resist them as they turned violent throwing brick bats on policemen, the ADC said.
Seven policemen were injured in the attack, Nurul said adding the police detained several people from the spot.
