The director general of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) said on Friday they are endeavouring to bring border killings down to zero.
At a press conference at Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) headquarters, Raman Srivastava presented data showing that the BSF had killed 55 Bangladeshi nationals in 2009, 32 in 2010 and only seven this year.
Terming the killings unfortunate, he claimed that Indian border guards opened fire in self defence, resulting in the casualties.
The visiting BSF chief suggested that civilians steer clear of the border line at night to avoid such incidents.
He was speaking at the joint news conference on the concluding day of a five-day border talks with their Bangladesh counterpart.
