DHAKA, Jan 28, 2019 (BSS) – The government has undertaken a plan to
construct 16-km underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-4 on Kamalapur-
Narayanganj route by 2030.

“We will take an initiative to construct underground MRT Line-4 route
under the existing Dhaka-Narayanganj railway track by 2030,” Road Transport
and Highways Division Additional Secretary Mohammed Belayet Hossain told BSS
today.

Hossain said the work for fixing associate organisations is underway to
conduct pre-feasibility study of the MRT Line-4 as part of the expansion of
the planned metro rail network for a coordinated modern public transport
management system in Dhaka metropolis and its surrounding areas.

The work of the project will begin as soon as the availability of fund, he
said.

According to a source of Road Transport and Bridges Ministry, the Dhaka
Mass Rapid Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) is advancing with the plan to
create a combined metro rail network with Dhaka Metropolitan City and its
surrounding areas for better traffic management.

Meanwhile, construction work for over 1.5 kilometre viaduct, partial
structure of the country’s first 20.1-km of the MRT Line-6, the elevated
metro rail system for Dhaka, became visible between Uttara and Agargaon. The
project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“With the installation of many piers, 1.5-km viaduct of the 20.1-kilometre
metro rail has become visible and all the construction work is progressing
fast,” MAN Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company, told
BSS earlier.

He said the authority finished construction work of around 150 piers out
of around 400 of the Uttara-Agargaon part of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)
Line-6.

very good initiative .

I like how the govt is focusing on railways. Railways should get the highest priority in a densely populated country with poor road infrastructures like ours.

4 lane highways are the first priority not rail. Rail is just an alternative.

Dhaka's main transportation should be metro.. Bus and rickshaw should be phased out.

Rickshaw for sure needs to be phased out - it all depends on if the government can create alternative jobs in the SEZs.

Bus is ok as long as they use their own dedicated roads which are being constructed.

Car usage should be heavily discouraged.

They were, some fifteen years ago. Called Easy Bikes. Runs on batteries and electric motor.

Now Easy Bikes are phased out from Dhaka thoroughfares as well. You can find them in small towns.

So much "phasing out", so much "advancement"!

Of course there is also more Bharati maal for BD (so it can focus on leading 4th industrial revolution instead):

these are very good for small distances, for small cities, not good for big cities.

Metro should be the main mode of mass transportation. But, Buses will always be there. How do you go to a place, say, 2 km away from a railway station without getting into a bus? Taxi is affordable to people like you, @Homo Sapiens and @Bilal9.

@Nilgiri
Busses will be there for last miles from one station to another .
