So if a father and his son, assess a high probability of being killed gratuitously just by going to a market or walking on a street, than taking arms to fight their potential killers is legitimate.
I do not know about this ISIS, but enough bombings killing innocent civilians have been going on in Iraq that worst than this ISIS thing could have been created. Not to forget the million or so civilian deaths, including children, women, the elderly and whole families during the US occupation
